Retired civil servant jailed
By S Ramesh | Posted: 08 September 2011 1946 hrs

SINGAPORE: A retired civil servant, who was accused last December of violating the Official Secrets Act, was sentenced to three weeks' jail on Tuesday.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) said it charged a retired senior civil servant in court with one count of receiving a confidential document and 24 counts of having in his possession sensitive and classified documents under the Official Secrets Act.

CPIB said after retirement, the accused was not authorised to receive any confidential document or retain any confidential or classified documents which he had obtained during his employment.

The accused was convicted on 17 August and sentenced to jail on Tuesday.

CPIB emphasised that the unauthorised receipt or possession of confidential and classified documents is a serious offence under the Official Secrets Act.

Those found guilty can be fined up to S$2,000 and jailed up to two years.

A deal was struck with this guy. In return for not being shamed in public, he has agreed to run in Aljunied GRC in 2016. People who are convicted of state secrets matters make good leadership material, not just in Singapore, but globally. Think Tharman. Think IMF job.

LOL. You have a fertile imagination.
Anyway, my suspicion is that this guy must be a retired ISD senior officer. But why give him only 3 weeks jail. He will be out in 2 weeks after the usual discounts. Serious offences such as this must be rewarded with harsh penalties.
