I have a fren from SG currently working in Melbourne as a nurse. She says that when she first applied to go over, she was given visa and whether she gets the PR is up to her employer willingness to sponsor her.

Another fren says that with a visa, all you need to do is stay in Australia for 2 out of 5 years and you automatically qualify for PR. There is no need to be employed in Australia.

Both are Indians. Who is right?

When you're granted residency in OZ, you need to reside in the country for 2 out of 5 years in order to retain your residency. If you don't, it will be withdrawn. You don't have to be employed. You just have to be there.

If you haven't been granted residency, you're not supposed to be there in the first place unless you're on some sort of visa. Different visas have different terms and conditions regarding employment.

Your nurse friend is under the 457 visa, something similar to an EP in SG. These are not under the PR visas. The other must have already been issued a PR class visa, which has a minimum requirement stay period. And it's 4 years now, for new PRs not 2.
