Singapore warship disrupts
two Somali pirate attacks

R.S.S. 'Endeavour' was conducting counter-piracy
operations east of the Internationally Recommended
Transit Corridor (I.R.T.C.) in the Gulf of Aden

SPECIAL REPORT FROM COMBINED MARITIME FORCES BAHRAIN
.

Coastweek -- Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) warship RSS Endeavour of the Republic of Singapore, assigned to the mission-based counter-piracy Combined Task Force (CTF) 151, disrupted two separate attacks by suspected pirates on merchant vessels transiting the Arabian Sea south of Oman, November 1.

RSS Endeavour was conducting counter-piracy operations east of the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) in the Gulf of Aden.

The Merchant Shipping Industry Best Management Practices (BMP) encourages merchant vessels to register with the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Organisation (UKMTO) whilst in the high risk area for piracy.

The MV BW Broker contacted UKMTO at approximately 8:00am and stated they were being chased by a suspicious skiff with seven people on board.

A ladder, which is a tool used by pirates to board vessels, was visible in the skiff and this indicated to the crew that it may be pirates.

(CTF) 151 Commander, Rear Admiral Kaleem Shaukat, Pakistan Navy, authorized RSS Endeavour to take appropriate steps to respond.

RSS Endeavour altered course to intercept the MV BW Broker and established direct communication with the merchant vessel.

RSS Endeavour also launched one of its embarked helicopters to rapidly provide direct support to the merchant vessel.

Buoyant with confidence due to RSS Endeavour’s helicopter support, MV BW Broker used speed, evasive manoeuvring and other BMP measures to prevent the suspected pirates from boarding and they broke off their attack.

Less than two hours later, at approximately 10:00 a.m., CTF 151 received another report from a merchant vessel under attack from suspected pirates.

MV Elka Athina, in close proximity to the MV BW Broker, contacted RSS Endeavour via bridge-to-bridge radio and reported that their ship was being approached at high speed by another skiff.

The skiff had five persons on board carrying weapons.

Once again, a helicopter from RSS Endeavour was tasked to investigate and again the suspected pirates were deterred from boarding the merchant vessel.

RSS Endeavour’s helicopter then located the suspected pirate skiff and followed it to its mothership.

When the suspected pirate skiff and helicopter both reached the vicinity of the suspected pirate dhow, communication was established between the helicopter and the suspected pirates.

The dhow was identified as a known pirate mothership that has previously been responsible for acts of attempted piracy.

RSS Endeavour’s efforts resulted in the suspected pirates abandoning their attack skiff and retreating to their mothership. RSS Endeavour’s helicopter destroyed the attack skiff and all associated pirate equipment.

After these successful disruptions, Rear Adm. Shaukat said,

"The goal of Combined Task Force 151 is to deter and disrupt acts of piracy on the high seas.

"This morning’s disruptions by RSS Endeavour were an excellent fulfilment of that goal.

"I commend the Commanding Officer and crew of RSS Endeavour on a job well done, and also thank CMF and the other naval forces in the area that cooperated in this successful disruption.

"Thanks to all of these combined efforts this morning, two merchant crews are safe and their vessels were able to continue to their destinations."

CTF 151 is a mission based counter-piracy task force that operates in the Southern Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Somali Basin, Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean in order to deter and disrupt piracy, protecting maritime vessels of any nationality and securing freedom of navigation for the benefit of all.

UPDATE:

Singapore Armed Forces task group foils
Somali pirate attacks in the Arabian Sea

REPORT CONTRIBUTED BY REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE NAVY
.

Coastweek -- The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) task group, comprising Landing Ship Tank (LST) RSS Endeavour and two Super Puma helicopters, disrupted two separate attacks by suspected pirates on merchant vessels that were transiting through the Arabian Sea, south of Oman, on November 01, 2011.

The SAF task group is operating under the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) counter-piracy mission Combined Task Force (CTF) 151.

The LST was patrolling east of the Internationally Recognised Transit Corridor (IRTC) in the Arabian Sea, when it responded to a call which the CTF 151 flagship USS Anzio had received from merchant vessel MV BW Broker, that it was being chased by a suspicious skiff.

The skiff had a ladder on its side, indicating a possible intent to board and attack the vessel.

RSS Endeavour immediately launched one of the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s (RSAF’s) helicopters on board to investigate the skiff, while it proceeded to the location of the merchant vessel.

The suspicious skiff was unable to board the vessel and broke off the attack.

Less than two hours later, RSS Endeavour was contacted by another merchant ship, MV Elka Athina, in the vicinity.

The vessel was being approached at high speed by a skiff with five people carrying weapons.

RSS Endeavour launched a helicopter again to investigate.

By the time the helicopter arrived, the skiff had broken off its attack.

The LST remained in the vicinity to survey the area.

The helicopter later located the suspicious pirate skiff which was heading towards the dhow, Shu’ai 3. CTF 151 had previously identified Shu’ai 3 as a pirate mothership associated with other attempted piracy activities.

The helicopter continued to shadow the skiff as RSS Endeavour closed in on both the skiff and the dhow.

The suspected pirates aboard the skiff surrendered.

As the helicopter approached the mothership dhow, a large bag, suspected of containing pirate paraphernalia, was thrown overboard from the pirate dhow.

The suspected pirates complied with orders to board the dhow which was to return to Somalia, while their skiff would be destroyed so that it could not be used further for piracy activities.

When the men were aboard the dhow, the RSAF helicopter was directed to fire at the abandoned skiff to sink it.

Taiwanese boat with 8 Pinoys retakes vessel from pirates

The crew of a Taiwanese fishing vessel hijacked by pirates off Somalia last Friday managed to overpower their captors and retake their vessel before dawn Sunday, Taiwanese authorities said.

A report on Taiwan's Central News Agency quoted Taiwan's Fisheries Agency as saying the crew of the Chin Yi Wen — eight of them Filipinos — escaped to safety with the help of British anti-piracy vessels.

But three crew members sustained slight injuries during the fight, the CNA report quoted the agency as saying. The nationalities of the three were not immediately known.

The CNA report said Taiwan's Fisheries Agency had been in close contact with the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) and the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) on the hijacking.

It said the 260-ton Kaohsiung-registered Chin Yi Wen with 28 crew members aboard rendezvoused with UKMTO-authorized British anti-piracy vessels in the Indian Ocean around 4 a.m. Sunday.

The boat has been heading toward Port Victoria in the Indian Ocean archipelago of the Seychelles since its escape, the agency said.

It is expected to arrive in the Seychelles port within 40 hours, under the escort of British and Seychelles vessels, it said.

Members of the crew included nine Chinese, eight Filipinos, six Indonesians and five Vietnamese.

The ship was lost Friday, when it was believed to have been seized by Somali pirates.

"In my memory, this is the first time sailors of a fishing vessel hijacked by Somali pirates have freed themselves on their own," Agence France Pressed quoted Tsay Tzu-yaw, spokesman for Taiwan's Fisheries Agency, as saying.

Tsay quoted the fishing boat's owner as saying the Somali pirates fell into the sea, although other details of the incident were not immediately clear.

According to Tsay, three sailors were slightly injured and the ship was heading for waters of the Seychelles.

Radio Netherlands Worldwide cited a report by Ecoterra International that at least 47 foreign vessels and more than 500 sailors are being held by pirates. - KBK, GMA News

Crew recapture Taiwan ship from Somali pirates

(AFP) – 16 hours ago

TAIPEI — The crew of a Taiwanese fishing vessel fought against armed Somali pirates to retake their ship after it was hijacked off East Africa, Taiwan authorities said Sunday.

The 290-tonne Chin Yi Wen with a crew of 28, including nine Chinese, eight Filipinos, six Indonesians and five Vietnamese, had been out of contact since Friday, the foreign ministry said.

But the crew managed to overwhelm the six armed pirates and retake control of their ship.

"In my memory, this is the first time sailors of a fishing vessel hijacked by Somali pirates have freed themselves on their own," Tsay Tzu-yaw, spokesman for Taiwan's Fisheries Agency, told AFP.

The Somali pirates fell into the sea, Tsay said, quoting the fishing boat owner, adding that details of the saga and the fate of the six pirates were not immediately clear.

Tsay said three sailors were slightly injured and the ship was heading for waters of the Seychelles.

Two decades of lawlessness have carved up Somalia into mini-fiefdoms ruled by gunmen and militia, encouraging rampant piracy.

At least 47 foreign vessels and more than 500 sailors are being held by pirates, according to Ecoterra International, which monitors maritime activity in the region.

The brave captain is a PRC working on that Taiwanese fishing boat the 8 crews are Pinoy.

;)

Captain snatch AK-47 from pirates when they were having meals. Crew join the fight and took away 6 AK-47. They used fishing hooks to injured pirates and forced pirates to jump boat. The pirate mother ship picked up pirates and pursued the fishing boat tailing them.

As civilian sailors does not know how to fire AK-47 captain ordered them to be thrown into sea.

Later they radioed SOS and British warship came to chase away pirates.

Bear handed captives can fight back armed pirates and retake the ship.

I think they are better than our SAF who are well armed by our tax dollars.

They should just let loose at the mudderfuckers. Their reports can say the pirates were resisting arrest and fired shots. Hundreds of millions of dollars are paid as ransom every year, not counting the cost of maintaining the patrols. Kill the mudderfuckers. Letting them off scot free after destroying their skiffs just a slap pinky slap on the face. Or are they afraid of retaliations? The pussies!

I fight and kill for non-violence.

why let the pirates surrender, just use the cannon fire at their boat and finish them.
bring them back to Somali, and they will come back again and attack ship!!

Waste of ammo to shot and sink a cheap empty Made In Africa skid. Our ammo cost many times more that piece of crap. Not counting Navy & RSAF operating hourly cost.

Shot their mother ship and sink it. If the pirates jumped let them drown. Then use copters to pick the corpse and dump them over their land bases from the air. Let their families and friends see how we killed them.

Where was Captain Jack Sparrow, when we needed him?. Luckily these group of Somalians not so sophiscated, or they would sunk the RSN ship. The ang moh gave the RSN an easy task...sink a 'kiidie' boat. These are small fry pirates, the bigger, better, faster ones. RSN no match.
