SINGAPORE: SilkAir - the regional arm of Singapore Airlines (SIA) - said on Monday (Mar 11) that its Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes are operating as scheduled, even as it is "closely monitoring developments" following the Ethiopian Airlines crash.

The Nairobi-bound Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302, a Boeing 737 Max 8, crashed minutes after takeoff from Addis Ababa on Sunday, killing all 157 people on board.

It was the second crash of the 737 MAX 8, the latest version of Boeing's workhorse narrowbody jet that first entered service in 2017.

“We are saddened by the loss of flight ET302 and our hearts go out to those affected. We are in contact with Boeing and are closely monitoring developments," an SIA spokesperson said in response to Channel NewsAsia's queries.

"The safety of our passengers and crew is of utmost importance to SilkAir. At this point SilkAir’s 737 MAX 8 flights are operating as scheduled."

SilkAir currently has six Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes in its fleet, with another 31 on firm order.

Those planes currently fly to Bengaluru, Cairns, Chongqing, Darwin, Hiroshima, Hyderabad, Kathmandu, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Phnom Penh, Phuket and Wuhan, said SIA.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was already under the spotlight over safety concerns, following the Lion Air crash last October that killed all 189 people on board just 13 minutes after takeoff from Jakarta.

Following Sunday's crash, China's aviation regulator has ordered Chinese airlines to suspend their Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft operations by 6pm.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China said in a statement it would notify airlines as to when they could resume flying the jets after contacting Boeing and the US Federal Aviation Administration to ensure flight safety.

China already suspended Boeing 737 Max. For safety of thr passenger, better take this matter seriously....

Monitoring is not good enough when hundreds of lives are at stake... will they take these planes themselves?

China and Indonesia have suspended all flights of Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft after the second deadly crash for the plane in less than five months.

The unprecedented grounding in two of the biggest Asian markets for the plane comes a day after Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 crashed soon after take-off killing all 157 people on board.

Revenue is more important than silly knee jerk reactions. No proof no action. Crash can be due to many reasons such as pilot sleeping / suicide.

so what is new ? Since when has a sinkie’s life is important when there is money to be made ? After all a simple sorry is good enough and no one gets fired.

Msybe its got something to do with puttingn the engine too far forward otherwise it wont fit underneath the wungs, affecting C o G and balance.

Silkair already crash one 737-300 before in Palembang.

KEY POINTS
  • Singapore’s aviation authority said it is temporarily suspending operation of all variants of Boeing’s 737 MAX aircraft into and out of the country.
  • The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore said the move will affect SilkAir, which operates six such aircraft, along with China Southern Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Shandong Airlines and Thai Lion Air.

Also gambling with the lives of pilots and crew members.

Shows how much the company really cares about them.

The plane so bad meh? Must ground? Or is it a political stunt to extract more benefits from Boeing n giving the yanks problems with regards to the trade war?

Not until they find out why ethiopia flight plunge vertically into the ground.

If it's the plane, there will be more plunge to the ground etc...not just 2
Bulk of max 8 operations are in US snd china. So far no issues. Or issues may start to come in after the two crashes as previously, it was muted.

.

So they are willing to ground now after being rebuked by CAAS. Really KNN.

I am surprised Boeing sells unreliable planes. They go back a long way and have decades of built experience. Hope it is not some technical fault, but pilot error or pilot suicide that caused the crashes. Or worse, sabotage by the chinks who are trying to market their own shit-brand planes.

China already banned liao. SilkAir no point flying it as China and Indonesia won’t allow B737 to enter its airspace. Without these 2 destinations SilkAir is as good as castrated. Might as well ground the plane and no need to pay those fat cat Pilots and cabin crew as well.

Only Ethiopia/Indonesia have problems but none in Europe/USA/China ect2 -so likely Pilot issues.
So good luck to those flying SIA piloted by Indian nationals

This has to be the most stupid decision made and one of the best oxymoronic statement I have seen in a long while.
