Singapore is the best place in Asia to be a mother, a report released on Monday by Save The Children showed.

The London-based charity compared 178 countries in terms of maternal health, child mortality, education and levels of women's income and political status. Singapore's 15th position worldwide - or second among non-European countries - puts it ahead of countries like the United States and New Zealand.

Finland is the best place to be a mother, followed by Norway, Sweden, Iceland and the Netherlands.

Somalia is the worst country on Earth to be a mother. It came bottom of the global rankings, although only narrowly below the Democratic Republic of Congo - the lowest ranking country last year - followed by Niger, Mali and Guinea-Bissau.

Could this be the reason why SG birth so low? Best doesn't mean affordable.

This shows how effective the PAP is in running the country. I would like to take this opportunity to thank LHL and his team for a job well done.

Please keep up the good work and I wish you every success in the 2016 election.

So much emphasis on women and mothers. How about a survey on the best places to be a father?

It is as though once you carry a foetus for nine months and experience the pain of childbirth, suddenly you're elevated to the position of a saint. :kma:

Most mothers in Singapore return tow work after childbirth. The maid is a big part of the child's upbringing. I am not sure if they got their facts right. And our dependency on maids to look after our kids is the highest in the developed world. None of the developed countries have maids as a mainstream institution let alone live in maids.

This is what I've learned from other Sporeans who are parents.:
The best place to have a baby is in the US, Canada, Australia,..... After the kids are grown up, they can sponsor their Spore parents when it is time to emigrate. Also if the baby is male, they will not have any NS commitments.

The best place to be a new dad is denmark, sweden.....you get up to a years paid leave. But you have to take care of the baby...get your hands dirty on diapers etc.

rather sad those childhood activities that i played are no longer possible for my kid. my kid has to go tuition at primary 2 while i never had any tuition at all.

that why i try my best to get him outdoor activities at weekend than stay home press tablet.

你这短命的, 人在nz不好好干, 却偏偏夸lhl的鳥大.干李涼.

Most mothers in most countries around the world have to tow work after childbirth as well. It applies to EU nations, the US, all other Asia nations. So unless U live on a farm in the middle of nowhere , don't talk cock

CNA: “Singapore best place in Asia to be a mother.”

Here is a quote from the CNA article:

“In Singapore, lifetime risk of maternal mortality has been cut by 80 per cent, child mortality decreased by 25 per cent, gross national income per capita doubled and percentage of women in parliament increased six-fold over the past 15 years, the report noted.

Singapore has done well on the index, far ahead of its regional counterparts, with significant cuts in maternal and child mortality, as well as improvements in the percentage of women in leadership positions in the country,” said Greg Duly, Regional Director for Save the Children in Southeast and East Asia.”

So the foremost issues that concern the organisation seem to be mortality, economic and leadership progress of women.

My hunch is that the issues that make being a mother in Singapore challenging are our
