Three dead in Greece debt protests

(UKPA) – 6 hours ago

Rioting over harsh austerity measures in Greece has left three people dead after an Athens bank was set alight - the first deaths during a Greek protest in nearly 20 years.

Fear that the bailout won't stop the debt crisis from spreading to other financially troubled EU countries like Portugal and Spain intensified amid the violence, as credit ratings agency Moody's put Portugal on watch for a possible downgrade.

Greece faces a May 19 due date on debt it says it can't repay without the help.

The new government cutbacks, which slash salaries and pensions for civil servants and hike consumer taxes, are being imposed as condition of getting a 110 billion euro (£93 billion) package of rescue loans from the International Monetary Fund and the other 15 European Union countries that use the euro as their currency.

An estimated 100,000 people took to the streets during a nationwide general strike that grounded flights, shut all services and pulled news broadcasts off the air.

Hundreds of demonstrators - including far right wing supporters - broke away from the marches and tried to storm parliament, shouting "thieves, traitors." At the opposite end of the political spectrum, groups of anarchists hurled Molotov cocktails and ripped-up paving stones at buildings and police, who responded with barrages of tear gas.

Three bank workers - a man and two women all aged between 32 and 36 - died of smoke inhalation after demonstrators torched their bank, trapping them. As their colleagues sobbed in the street, four others were rescued from a balcony. A senior fire department official claimed demonstrators prevented firefighters from reaching the burning building.

Fifteen civilians and 29 police were injured in what Civil Protection Minister Michalis Chrisohoides called "a black day for democracy." Twelve people were arrested in Athens and another two in the northern city of Thessaloniki, which also saw clashes between police and demonstrators.

"I have difficulty in finding the words to express my distress and outrage," President Karolos Papoulias said. "The big challenge we face is to maintain social cohesion and peace. Our country came to the brink of the abyss. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that we don't step over the edge."

They only care about the trifle .

damn right they are .

You have to ask GIC and Temasek why they are taking on USA debt ridden stocks and bonds !

Why are we buying their debt ?

They think citizens do not question them .

But we will let all the investors in Asia know it .

Some points to think about

1)Greece = in very bad debt situtation

SG run on Surplus almost yearly(Global economic recession year aside)

2)Greece = bankrupt, Big bro EU come to rescue

SG = bankrupt = kena ownz. U expect someone to come to rescue? Malaysia? Indonesia? Thailand? lol

Greece army and police = Professional Army

SG army and police = NSmen - translation, U and me

Considering situation 1)there is no reason for anyone to start burning banks
If we look at point number 2) we would all be very stupid to allow it to get to that stage since we will pretty much all be totally screwed if we even get anywhere near that stage in the first place and considering point number 3). The government wont be able to defend themselves without the police or the army if the civilians, who ARE the police and the army, are not supporting them in the first place so here's a thought.

Why not just kick them out and put in someone else instead of doing something like burning banks and staging mass rallies and violent protest which is going to make the economy go from bad to worse.

Oh yeah just a final word on this, anyone who suggest Police and Army will stand and shoot civilians? Let me put it simply, if PAP recall U back for reservist to stop a popular revolt against them, would U do it?

......demonstrators .....shouting "thieves , traitors." ......I have difficulty in finding the words to express my distress and outrage,..... It is our collective responsibility to ensure that we don't step over the edge."

For a moment I thought they were referring to those ministers who paid themselves ridiculously high salaries to screw their own people by giving jobs to foreigners.

I also have difficulty in finding the right words in expressing my anger at the billions of losses in public funds by the state sovereign funds, the mad prices of so called subsidized public housing, high health, transport and food cost and the govt levy's on maids, driving ect2.
Even the former AG cannot express himself properly.

Unless we vote wisely, this place will go over the edge-just look at the screw ups in the 2 gambling dens ..oops sorry I meant the so called IRs.
