Nasi padang: hails from Padang, Sumatra (cuisine of the Minangkabau people)
Nasi kandar: brought by Tamil Muslims to Penang
Both similar in that it's rice served with various dishes. Difference lies in the styles of cooking: kandar is mainly meat curries and dalcha, while padang is more varied with their belado, goreng, bakar, penyet and the famous rendang dishes.
