There's no alternative to NS. How else is Singapore going to raise a respectably sizeable army? All regulars? We'd have around 10,000 combat aficionados or commercially unemployable desperados only. The problem is not with NS as a system per se. The problem is with PAP, white horses, elites corrupting the NS system for their own benefits to generate paper-colonels and paper-generals while using those below as slaves taken for granted and stepping stones. The question shouldn't be whether there should be NS or not. The question should be how to make NS fairer to all citizens and more practically useful to the nation.
