In signing the first Free-Trade Agreement with New Zealand, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong made a nudge to the country to include Singapore in its next movie blockbuster.
He said in a report by The Information Daily Limited: "I've watched all three ‘Lord of the Rings’ (movies). I look forward to ‘The Hobbit’ and I hope that maybe Singapore can have a small piece the next time you make... another blockbuster.”
This is PM Lee’s second visit to New Zealand since he became Prime Minister in 2004 and he would like to see the two countries build even closer ties. He also mentioned that Singapore is developing innovation and creative industries and could be a possible partner with New Zealand on such ventures.
He said: "You can use us as a springboard, set up in Singapore, cover Southeast Asia or even beyond.”
Speaking to community and business leaders in Auckland, he said that there is a strategic shift in the world economy with the centre of gravity moving eastwards. This means more could be done in terms of promoting international trade, for example, in developing food products for Asian tastes, TODAY newspaper reported.
He also responded to questions on immigration, saying Singapore would continue to invite immigrants but the pace of immigration needs to be sustainable: "The more societies are able to make these adjustments, I think the more flexible and the more vibrant you'll be in the long term.”
At a tea reception with about 100 Singaporeans living in Auckland, he urged overseas Singaporeans to take part in the national conversation about the country's future, TODAY reported.
In writing about his visit, New Zealand news site Stuff mentioned that PM Lee is “one of the most highly-paid leaders in the world”, earning S$2.2 million a year compared to New Zealand prime minister John Key’s S$411,000.
It also noted that PM Lee is “a fan of the breakout hit ‘Gangnam Style’ by South Korean rapper Psy, of which he posted a parody on his Facebook this week”.
After the three-day visit, the Prime Minister will move on to tour Australia. He wrote on his Facebook page on Saturday that he was looking forward to meeting “some of the many Singaporeans living in Australia (in Melbourne)”.
