Bitcoin can be traded for real currency at any bitcoin exchage. Mt Gox is currently the largest bitcoin exchange. Current price is 68USD per bitcoin. It was only about 15USD in december last year

Think of it as digital gold. It is finite in supply, and more bitcoins get 'mined' at an ever reducing rate until supply goes to zero around 2140. It is this scarcity (and the fact that people attach value to it) which gives it it's value. However, unlike gold, it is an anonymous currency and can be transferred to any person with almost no transaction costs

There is speculation that this may be the currency of the future, leading to a possible value of possible thousands of dollars per bitcoin. This could theoretically easily occur, but only if mass adoption occurs and bitcoin ends up getting used the way paypal does, for example

Having said that though, bitcoin is still in very early stages, and although businesses are already sprouting up, accepting bitcoin in exchange for goods & services (most notably illegal drugs), there are not yet many of them
