(22 May) – THE number of unemployed Filipinos has hit a new record-high of 34.4 percent or 13.8 million, according to the latest Social Weather Stations survey.

The survey results, which were first published in BusinessWorld, showed that 13.8 million individuals or 34.4 percent of the Filipinos were unemployed. The number is 10 points higher than the 24 percent, or about 9.7 million, recorded in December 2011.
SWS said that it also surpassed the previous record of 34.2 percent in February 2009.

The survey results contradicts the government’s own Labor Force Survey (LFS) in January which showed that unemployment rate eased slightly to 7.2 percent that month from 7.4 percent the previous year, with the rank of the jobless barely moving to 2.922 million from 2.917 million in the same periods.

Young and jobless, the pollster said that its latest survey also found that the unemployed—covering those aged at least 18 years who did not have work and were looking for a job —consisted of 13 percent retrenched, 15 percent resigned and six percent first-time job seekers.
‘It added that 10 percent of those who were retrenched had previous contracts that were not renewed, two percent had employers who closed shop, and one percent were laid off.
