What is the purpose of building Marina Barrage?

From the press reports and PUB statements, all the gates were opened to let the water out into the sea whenever it rains.
So What is the purpose? Was it a wise investment?

It's main use is a reservoir for drinking water (for the thirsty mouths of 1 million extra people).

Secondary use: to control flooding. The floods merely shifted locations.

Marina Barrage also acts as a tidal barrier to keep seawater out, helping to alleviate flooding in low lying areas of the city such as Chinatown, Jalan Besar and Geylang. However, it turns out that flooding areas have now moved to Orchard and Bukit Timah.

Since completion of the Marina Barrage, there has been annual floodings in areas (e.g. Orchard Road shopping belt) which had been flood-free. There is a suspicion that the Barrage is slowing down the discharge rate of the storm water into the open sea.

It is also used as a place for water sports. This is a beneficial side effect, but is it economically and environmentally viable?

Should have let the water out first during low tide then close it when the water is low enough and let the flood water flow into the bay to be released to sea again during the next low tide. The weather man must be quite good to permit perfect synchronization because the other objective of serving as a reservoir does not allow a strict adherence to a high tide low tide procedure.

Strange I don't get it. We spent few hundred millions just to shut and close where necessary.

How much drinking water have been achieved?

It's part of an overall plan to wean Singapore of its dependency on a bunch of Muslim Loonies up North.

If may cause a few minor inconveniences because of its imperfect design but that's nothing compared to the suffering that would befall Singaporeans if Malaysia cut off the water supply as an act of aggression.

I'm really surprised at your ignorance regarding Singapore's precarious position as the only non Muslim nation in a Muslim sea.
