What is really the point of the cooling off day?

What was the justification for such a strange idea? Is this a practice found elsewhere too......or is it a PAP "political Innovation".

What political advantages does it give the incumbent party anyway?

Does it eat into the already very short 9 day campaigning period?

Can the voters will be influenced by the mainstream media within that one day to change their minds?

Why come up with it at all?
