US$1m prize to redesign S'pore's shipping ports

SINGAPORE - The Singapore government is offering a US$1-million (S$1.29-million) cash prize as part of a competition to redesign the country's shipping ports.
Dubbed the Next Generation Container Port Challenge, the competition is jointly organised by the Singapore Maritime Institute and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). Up to S$5 million in grants for research and development will also be considered as awards to selected teams.
Announcing the competition, Singapore's Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew highlighted yesterday the need for Singapore to revamp its ports to cope with the fast-changing landscape of the maritime industry. The competition aims to encourage radical new designs for the next generation of container ports, Mr Lui said.
"We want them not only to think out of the box, but around and even ahead of the box. The winning concept will have to embody innovation, efficiency, productivity and sustainability," he added.
Separately, Jurong Port (JP) and the MPA yesterday signed an agreement to develop green port technologies and productivity solutions.
Called the Green Port and Productivity Solutions research and development programme, the initiative will see MPA's Maritime Innovation and Technology Fund and JP each commit S$6 million over five years on green technology and productivity projects in the port.
This may be used for research on reducing its carbon footprint and improving productivity for its existing and future terminals. Ryan Huang
