The West refused to accept Hamas election victory. They back the losing side, the Fatah now rebranded as Palestinian Authority.

Hamas has no power to hold the election. That power lies with the Palestinian Authority who rules the west bank and recognised as legitimate government by the West and Arab monarchs.
