8m population by 2030?

SINGAPORE - Earlier this year, Singaporeans balked at the idea of having 6.9 million people on our tiny island. But some experts, including Dr Parag Khanna, Senior Fellow at the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, has said that Singapore can fit 8 million or more by 2030.

That is, if urban planning plays its part in spreading out the load.

"There is a much more physically devolved Singapore in which the towns play a much stronger role, in which there's much more local economic activity and vibrancy, in which everyone is not cramping down into Orchard or CBD every single day. And that Singapore can most certainly accommodate a couple million more people."

Dr Khanna was speaking at The Straits Times Global Outlook Forum on Friday.

The first mention of 8 million population was in August this year by a PAP-Press columnist. Tell you, 8 million by 2020 with 60 percent of the population being made up of foreigners is a reality.

The so-called 'expert' is just an Indian-born globalist, wanting to make Singapore into the rehearsal stage of a one world government.

During 2007, Mr. Khanna was a senior geopolitical advisor to United States Special Operations Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. From 2002 to 2005, he was the Global Governance Fellow at the Brookings Institution, managing the World Economic Forum’s Global Governance Initiative.

My take of Peesai`s growth is this - it will continue to grow so long as there is continued peace and progress in the region. Look at Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila, KL - all bursting at the seams, and still growing. In the region, which is the most centrally located city? - Singapore. Which city has the easiest/most convenient cash and banking systems? - Singapore. Which city best suits Europeans, Japanese, Indians, Middle-Easterners to move to? Singapore. Which country can one get by knowing one language, English? - Singapore. There you have it. 6.9, 8 million, whatever, these are just numbers for people to debate over; Singapore will continure to grow. Looking back, Singapore was already crowded by the nineties, it is just more crowded now - just go to any mall and try getting a park lot around lunch time, good luck, keep calm. Its going to get more crowded.

Cheers!

I have to disagree. Even if you have money the quality of life in Spore is not that great. Just look at Thailand. You will find many russians, aussies, americans, Bits, middle easterners, ........ in Bangkok & Pattaya.
It's cheaper & more interesting over there.

If you don't like city life you can choose one of the quieter towns. That is something you can't do in crowded Spore.

ah neh definition of population "density" is very unique and different from the rest of the world. :p

Was there ever a doubt that the figures presented to the public were not the "exact truth"?

I never believed them.. not when I experienced so much troubles when looking for a change in employment.. and when I was in companies that hired MANY foreigners.. and the frigging ppl dared to say that SG ppl were choosy.. and that the %tage of foreigners were low..

Now.. look at their back-tracking.. AGAIN!! Changing rules to make it so that employers "should" consider SG ppl.. before even considering foreigners... one wonders how many boneheads still believe these million-dollar actors?

Life can't be calmer as we SG gets more crowded.. as there is nowhere else to go to calm ourselves down. Mt/ Faber? Nope.. tourist and loungers hangout! Bukit Timah Hill? Na... nature lovers and also joggers will pass you by almost every 10 mins.

Countryside then? WHAT COUNTRYSIDE!!!??? SG IS A CITY/ISLAND/NATION/STATE!!!! We are all STUCK HERE!!

Where else can we go?? JB? Crimes targetting SG ppl are always high.. Batam? Bintan? Squeeze with those who go there for their wkend mistresses and lovers or wkend bonks. Not a good place for a family or a person looking for a quiet retreat.

Tensions and tempers will rise as less and less personal space is available for each SG citizen. We will be squeezed out.. not only in jobs.. but probably in MRTs, buses and even taxis.

Good luck to pappeis supporters.. when their jobs, houses, transport.. everything gets harder and harder to get!!

I was skeptical until I saw the plans for the underground city... And I mean way way down underground deeper than our current underground. Guess we may turn out like the Morlocks in the movie Time Machine!!

Ah tat is music to pappie ears..that is the new target they aim for...or it was their old target. But revised downwards?

Decisions that are made based on fear will not end well. It's the same for personal life as well as for running a country.

Greed is nothing more than fear of losing out, mass importing of people is fear of economic irrelevance.

This country, this world needs a wake up call, a 'hard reset' to chop down this materialism. Perhaps some natural disaster or plague will set things right.

In plain Engrish, Mr Khanna has been a spy working for the US surveillance programme.

On the front page of The Straits Times published on October 8, 2013, it was revealed that by 2030 there will be 320 km of train lines.

At present Sinkieland has half of that and the current total population is 5.3 to 5.5 million.

So how big the total population will be in 2030? You do the math...

I wonder why anyone will want to let PAP survive till 2030. Even with constant garbage like this. Make a guess what your pay will be then with even more foreign workers

Always beware of these academics, these 'talking mouths' from various think-tanks who push for an agenda. They're paid to do so.

For the phony war on terror, it was Rohan Gunaratna.

Now it looks like Parag Khanna is unleashed for pushing forth Agenda 21.

When more urban planning masterplans and blueprints are revealed, expect catch phases such as ‘sustainability’, ‘smart growth’ and ‘high density urban mixed use development’. They have a plan and they are going to execute it.

Yes. so we better execute their master first. 17 years to do that

Am sure this fucking keeling kia is speaking comparatively with the population in Mumbai.

As it is now, driving along all the expressways, I consider it a good day when I can hit 70 kph from a speed limit of 90 kph.

Prices of property and food will hit record high.

Agree. There were a few race-related riots on the outskirts of Paris last year.

White Europeans are hypocrites. In the name of non-discrimination and human rights, they allow millions of non-whites (especially Africans and Middle Easterns) into their countries. But we all know white Europeans will never consider them as equals.

A case in point: Roma people (called "gypsies" in France) have settled in Europe more than a thousand years ago. They were thought to be descendants of people who migrated from Rajasthan in what is modern day India. They are still being discriminated in modern Europe.

Another case in point: White Americans only started to make life easier for African-Americans after the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Prior to that Americans of African descent have been living in the USA since the early days of the slave trade.

...Now it looks like Parag Khanna is unleashed for pushing forth Agenda 21...............

As I mentioned before, all plans, masterplans, Agenda 21, government policies, theories and hypotheses have to be based on certain assumptions.

The successful outcome of those plans, masterplans.... hinges on those assumptions.

And the assumptions for increasing the present population to 6.9 million are flimsy at best.
