A Delaware family of five was found shot to death inside their home — victims of a horrific “murder-suicide,” according to police.
Cops say Matthew Edwards, 42, gunned down his wife and three young children on Monday night before turning the gun on himself.
Neighbors told NBC10 that he had been having marital problems, and recently lost his job.
Authorities responded to the family’s home in Prices Corner shortly before 8 p.m. on Monday night and found them dead upstairs.
Julie Edwards, 41, had been shot once, along with the children. Police identified them on Tuesday as a 6-year-old boy, 4-year-old girl and 3-year-old boy.
“The victims were located inside the home deceased, all from an apparent gunshot wound,” cops said. “The individuals have been turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science where autopsies were performed and have ruled the deaths to be murder/suicide by gunshot.”
A family friend and neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said he spoke with Edwards on Sunday — and that he had been “emotional” about work and his marital issues.
“Just worry about your kids,” the neighbor remembered telling him.
While Edwards and his wife allegedly had marital problems, local residents said it was never taken out on the children.
“They were happy kids, they were really happy kids,” local resident Kim Ternenyi told WPVI. “She was a wonderful mom, she was very dedicated to her kids. I can’t believe all this.”
Several people recalled seeing the family outside over the weekend, playing in their backyard.
“My wife and I are kind of in shock,” said neighbor Brian Covenko. “We are just stunned and it kind of felt like something you see on TV, like ‘Law and Order’ or a movie, just doesn’t seem real.”
