SINGAPORE — Expressing extreme concern over today’s (July 7) train disruption, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said he has told SMRT and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to “work through the night to fully recover train services and ensure that services run properly tomorrow”.

“This is the first time that services on both the North-South and East-West Lines were affected at the same time,” said Mr Lui in a Facebook post at about 10.10pm.

He said he was at the LTA’s Operations Centre.

“They have briefed me about what happened and what could have caused it, but it is too early to conclude definitively. We need to get to the bottom of what caused tonight’s disruption,” he wrote. “I am sorry that so many commuters experienced massive disruptions to their journeys during the evening peak hours.”

In a separate Facebook post, LTA Chief Executive Chew Men Leong said: “Preliminary investigations indicate that a power surge caused the protective relays to be activated, leading to a shut-down of power across the entire North South East West Line network.”

“All passengers who were on board trains during the disruption were safely detrained at station platforms. All available bus assets were activated across the whole island to provide free bus service for affected commuters, with the police helping with crowd control,” Mr Chew said.

He added that LTA will conduct a full investigation into this incident.

According to Old Fart's crony, Liu Thai Ker, Sinkapore can accommodate 10 million people: 2 million each in the east, west, north, south and 2 million in central Sinkapore.
