Weak sales lead to Panasonic loss

Panasonic is the world's largest maker of plasma TVs

Low demand for electronic goods such as digital cameras and televisions during the recession has been blamed for another sharp loss at Panasonic.

The popularity of cheaper gadgets and restructuring costs also played a part in the Japanese company losing 52.98bn yen ($558m; £332m) from April to June.

The Lumix camera and Viera TV firm has made three quarterly losses in a row.

Panasonic said it was struggling to adapt as its focus moved to emerging markets such as India and China.

Sales fell in every major product category - including video and television products, personal computers and home appliances such as air conditioners.

Government stimulus measures in markets such as the US to encourage consumer spending were helping, it said, but this did not allow it to be overly optimistic.

Last week, Sony Corp reported a 37.1bn yen loss between April and June.
