(Reuters) - U.S. federal regulators recently called a number of banks asking if they would consider buying Washington Mutual Inc should it eventually falter, the New York Post said, citing sources.

Federal banking regulators, in recent days, contacted Wells Fargo & Co, JPMorgan Chase & Co, HSBC and several other financial institutions to gauge their interest in a possible acquisition of WaMu, the paper said.

No merger discussions are currently under way between the Seattle-based bank and anyone else, the sources told the paper.

Washington Mutual could not be immediately reached for comment.

JPMorgan Chase & Co could be the likely suitor.

More likely to be Wells Fargo Bank (since this together with Bank of America are the 2 largest retail banks in the US). Need to follow Bank of America stategy to play catchup.

JP Morgan Chase already got Bear Stearns clients/biz , therefore more unlikely suitor

Do they want to follow Temasek or just roll funds !

No need be so loud. I hear you.
Nevertheless, with the US Housing crisis ongoing, the whole mess is being played out as the weeks passes. I believe more banks will failed. This crisis in the US seems very similar to the Japan property bubble almost 2 decade ago. And they (Japan) are still hobbling along as till now. I think it will be the same for the US.

Keep a close look on GM and Ford, autos won't be spared.
