if he were, his ex-employees, colleagues and associates would be out in full force to support him.

i still couldn't get over his hidden agenda about the "100K signatures" demand. this article by the infamous BRYAN T stirs up more question marks about tkl.

"Some present and former employees of NTUC Income will probably have shivers down their spine if they hear their former boss wants to be the next President of Singapore.

If Tan Kin Lian runs without the support of his former employer, these employees will in all likelihood volunteer to help the candidates opposing him.

There are as man...y others, who will firmly stand by him, help his campaign and ensure he gets a good chance at being elected.

That is the kind of loyalty and reaction Tan Kin Lian attracts as a leader." - ex-NTUC Income legal staff [1]

....my analysis of this "leader" is this:

If TKL were an excellent leader-cum-boss and had retired gracefully, almost all in his ex-organisation would have stepped forward enthusiastically to support his political endeavours, in this case, the EP contest.

If he was a reasonable boss who treated people fairly, maybe 50% of his ex-employees will come forward to support him, while the rest will remain inactive and neutral.

But if he were one who was characteristically biased and often exercised favoritism towards a distinct group (who sucked up to him), it would be as what the blogger: most would volunteer to help his opponents while those had who cozied and in turn benefited personally from him will stand firmly by him as a form of gratitude.

as expected, BRYAN T was banned fr posting in tkl's FACEBOOK. what a joke!

Presidential hopeful Tan Kin Lian got the chance to sample opinion from the ground when he took a taxi - and found out that he might not be the most popular candidate among taxi drivers.

Many taxi drivers are supporting Dr Tony Tan, his taxi driver told the former CEO of NTUC Income, who posted details of his encounter on his Facebook.

Mr Tan announced his intention to contest the coming Presidential Election earlier this month.

Besides Mr Tan, Dr Tony Tan and Dr Tan Cheng Bock have also announced their candidacy.

In Mr Tan's Facebook message, he wrote that the driver told him many taxi drivers backed Dr Tan because they knew who he was.

Mr Tan also pointed out that the driver did not seem to know much about Dr Tan Cheng Bock.

At the end of the journey, Mr Tan discovered the taxi driver had recognised him all along, because the driver said to him: "Don't worry, Mr. Tan. I will support you."

taxi uncles if they happen to pick up tony tan or tan cheng bock would definitely say the same thing to them. now what's tan kin lian trying to imply? he's more popular and he's hotter media whore??

n Kin Lian: Don't resort to smear campaigns

One day after announcing his intention to contest in the Presidential Election, former NTUC chief Mr Tan Kin Lian says that his aim in running in the election is to give Singaporeans a wider choice of candidates to vote for.

In a statement which he released to the media, Mr Tan said that he will be using his blog and issuing statements through the media to allow people to get to know him better and share his views on issues which are important to them.

He also stated that he hoped people will focus on the strong points of the candidates, and not resort to "unfair means to smear the reputation of those who are willing to stand up for Singapore."

Here is the full statement from Mr Tan:

Contest the Presidential Election
I have decided to contest the Presidential Election. My main aim is to give Singaporeans a wider choice of candidates to vote as the next President of Singapore.

I will be communicating with the people on my views on several issues that are important to them. I shall issue statements through my blog and in the media on my views. I hope that the people will get to know me better from these statements.

My views on many issues affecting the future of Singapore will be guided mainly by my personal values of honesty, fairness, positive approach, courage and public service. I want the people to know me by these values and to honor me by sharing some or all of these values.

Presidential Candidates

I have high respect for two other candidates who have expressed interest to contest the election, namely Dr Tan Cheng Bock and BG George Yeo. I also have the same regard for Dr Tony Tan and President Nathan, if they wish to contest this election. Each candidate has his strong points.

I hope that this contest will be carried out on a positive climate and that the people will focus on the strong points of the candidates, rather than adopt unfair means to smear the reputation of those who are willing to stand up for Singapore.

Hopefully, the outcome of this presidential election will be a win, not only for the successful candidate but also for the people of Singapore.

I echo the sentiment expressed by Mr. Ng Ya Ken in Today paper (8 June 2011). He said, “Allow losers in the Presidential Election the opportunity to serve on the Council of Presidential Advisers if they garner, say, 20 per cent of the vote. This might encourage more eligible and capable people to step forward.

It would also add diversity to the composition of the council, which in turn would enhance the Elected Presidency institution”. I had discussed a similar idea with my friends previously but Mr. Ng had expressed it with the appropriate words.

I share the views of Dr. Tan Cheng Bock that the next President should play a role to unify the country.

Participation of the people

I have benefited from the participation of many people who have given their concerns, suggestions, and ideas to me by e-mail and comments in my blog and Facebook. This has helped me to understand better the key issues that have to be addressed and to find some possible approaches to address them.

I have stated my views on these matters based on the information that is available to me now. Some information may surface later that may change some of my views.

I hope that my friends will understand this limitation. But I want my friends to know that the future decisions will continue to be made on the values of honesty, fairness, positive approach, courage and public service.

If I am elected into the office of the President, I intend to build a platform for the people to continue to communicate with my office, using the modern communication tools.

I want to make it easy for the people to express their aspirations and give their feedback on issues that need to be addressed.

I will not be able to manage the interactions personally and should be able to get the appropriate people to assist me in managing this process.

This should be on the big issues affecting the country and the people and not the personal issues that can be addressed by the elected members of Parliament.

My friend has suggested that this should be named as the president’s personal council.

I will give further thought to this idea, especially on its practical implementation. I believe that it will be a good channel to maintain close contact with the people.

President ‘has no role to advance his policy agenda’

Yahoo News

Another government leader has stepped forward to clarify the President's role and powers.

Citing the Constitutional position on the Presidential role, Minister for Law K Shanmugam stressed that the President "has custodial powers, not executive powers".

"In other words, he can veto or block Government actions in specified areas, but he has no role to advance his own policy agenda," said Minister Shanmugam in a three-page statement issued to the mainstream media on Friday.

"Recent comments in the media suggest some confusion over what the President can and cannot do," said Minister Shanmugam, who is also Minister for Foreign Affairs.

He urged, "As the Presidential Elections approach, it is important for Singaporeans to understand what the President is elected and empowered .....
