Wanted: More girls in engineering

ENGINEERING has always been seen as a man's world, but Professor Victor Shim from the Faculty of Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS) said it would do better with a woman's touch.

The vice-dean for external relations at the faculty wants to increase the intake of female engineering students to between 40 and 45 per cent of the first-year intake. It has fluctuated between 23 and 31 per cent from 2005 till now.

'Engineering has always been about solving problems. Today's technology and products need the talents of both men and women, with their unique perspectives and insights. Otherwise, we miss out on potentially half the ideas and benefits that could make life better,' Prof Shim said.
