So how did Singapore become a nation of superficial individuals with a tragic lack of civic mindedness and political consciousnesses with a penchant for writing trivia on FB even on topics that are serious.

Multifaceted issue- the education system in the 60s through 70s churned out tonnes of conformists. The accumulation of wealth occured during the 80s, we were in the golden period in the 90s, and all of these successes culminated in the pride of the Sinkies. The HDBs eroded the kampong spirit, large families became nucleated small units. Further reduction of human to human interactions due to the population policy of the late 60s resulted in lower EQ, folks found it more important to keep to a small family unit to sustain the same standards of living.

Kampong spirit is not unique to Singapore. Most countries have that 'same village/small town' helpful nature too. That 'kampong' spirit is simply eroded away by urbanization. Housing in most urban places are meant for small families, not large ones like in the countryside. Shitty housing or urban slums happen when you have too many people living in apartments meant for much smaller families.

Accumulation of wealth by the masses could only happen due to good policies of the PAP. Granted not everyone benefits, but enough people did. And that is what stable rich democracies do. Policies are passed to benefit the vast majority in actual terms.

My recent experiences with some young sinkies at work have restored some of my faith in the next generation. Many have grown up with the internet and have a more worldly view.

At home the "silent majority" on social media had traditionally been the pro establishment. I think the trend has been reversing.

If the Lee hsien loong keeps up his standard of (under-) performance... And the opposition is given more time to rejuvenate....

The next GE would be an interesting one.

I agree. They also know it that is why the easy pathway to acquire Singapore citizenship by foreigners with little or not talent but on the strength of their employment pass given. The tenure is only 2 years. The new citizens and pioneer generations are their captive. So a store supervisor from the Philippines with 2 years is eligible for one. Does not even require degree or a trade or skill certificate which is common amongst other countries.

The good foreigners with talent and the credentials / qualifications will bide their time and apply to 1st world countries.
