PEKAN, Pahang: Making his first public appearance after stepping down as Barisan Nasional’s (BN) chairman, Malaysia’s former prime minister Najib Razak returned to his constituency in Pekan on Sunday (May 20) and spent more than half an hour explaining why the coalition’s historic defeat was not his fault.

At an annual meeting of the United Malays National Organisation's (UMNO) Pekan division, the 64-year-old struck a defiant tone and slammed the manner in which his opponents, Pakatan Harapan, had campaigned.

“It wasn't a contestation of ideas. It was a contestation of fake news,” Najib, who has held the parliamentary seat of Pekan for 42 years, told hundreds of his supporters gathered inside the auditorium at UMNO’s Pekan headquarters. Many of them had a grief-stricken look on their faces. Some were in tears.

“There was a campaign of personal attacks, slander, hatred and sweet promises – most of which obviously cannot be delivered,” Najib said. “Unfortunately, they've caused us defeat in the polls.”

The election defeat is the first for his party and the BN coalition, which had ruled Malaysia along with its predecessor the Alliance Party for 61 years since independence from British rule. It also made him the country's first prime minister to have lost in a general election.

To Najib, however, the May 9 election was not a fair contest. His defeat, he implied, is a result of a dirty political game orchestrated by Pakatan Harapan, whose leader 92-year-old Mahathir Mohamad is serving as prime minister for the second time.

The nonagenarian shocked the world when he toppled BN in a landslide victory that has rendered his former protege almost powerless overnight.

Najib is now facing a high-profile graft probe into his alleged involvement with debt-ridden state fund 1MDB and barred from leaving the country. The case, reopened shortly after Mahathir took power, could land him and his close associates in a legal minefield if the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and law enforcement officers show evidence that they were involved in a crime.

In 2015, Najib was accused of channelling nearly US$700 million from the fund into his personal bank accounts – a claim he has denied. Following the scandal, two of his Cabinet ministers were removed in a reshuffle after criticising the government’s handling of the investigation. Former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail was also sacked after leading the probe into allegations against him.

The 1MDB scandal and his government’s introduction of a 6 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) were seen as having great influence on voters.

To Najib, the votes were manipulated by a campaign designed to “demonise” him.

“They did everything to tarnish me. They attacked me and my wife, saying I had to refer to her before making any decision. This is slandering. We made decisions in the Cabinet, not at my house,” the Pekan MP said on Sunday.

“I didn't say to the ministers, ‘Wait. I have to refer to my wife’. Never. My wife knows many things but it doesn't mean she has the final call.”

During his speech, Najib also made a reference to recent police raids at properties related to him and his family, where truckloads of hundreds of luxury handbags, bags stuffed with cash, jewellery and expensive items were confiscated by anti-corruption officers.

“After I handed over the power, this is how I've been treated. Even my children's residences were raided. Baby shoes were also taken away. Their wedding gifts were seized,” he said.

“What is the relation between 1MDB and children's shoes? What is the relation between wedding gifts and 1MDB?”

PEKAN RESIDENTS REMAIN LOYAL TO NAJIB

In his constituency, however, it seems Najib remains well loved and continues to enjoy unwavering support both from the residents and his party members.

Zakri Kassim, head of UMNO’s branch in FELDA Chini Timur Dua of Pekan, told Channel NewsAsia he was touched by Najib’s speech and criticised law enforcement officers for not “treating him like a former leader”.

"He's being treated like a robber, yet without any evidence to prove he's guilty," he said. "But UMNO will rise again."

When Najib arrived at his residence at Seri Kenangan in Pekan on Sunday, a crowd of excited supporters greeted him and his wife Rosmah Mansor with hugs and kisses. The former prime minister was all smiles and thanked them for their support. He also joined local women in making the traditional porridge, bubur lambuk, for breaking fast.

Many Pekan residents believe Najib is an innocent victim of a political game.

“I’m sad about what has happened. He has helped us rebuild our homes after a bad storm. Although he lost at the national level, I’m proud he won in Pekan,” said a 34-year-old shopkeeper, who would only give her name as Syaida.

She said the corruption allegations against Najib could be fake but would accept the investigation result if there is enough evidence.

“We don't know. Maybe he made a mistake. Maybe it wasn't his fault,” she added.

Another resident, who wanted to be known only as Rohayu, refuses to believe that her MP committed a crime. Commenting on the luxury items that have been confiscated by the police during the recent raids, she said: “He is a son of a former prime minister. So the wealth could have come from his parents. He’s from a rich family.”

When Najib spoke, a few supporters tried to hold back tears as they listened to their leader. He consoled them and urged them to trust UMNO in its “holy and noble struggle”.

“Don't feel down. If you want to cry when you see me, it's all right. It's also okay if you want to hug me,” UMNO’s Pekan division chief told the audience.

“Be confident in UMNO's struggle. We must keep fighting. We're in a tough situation but remember, our struggle is holy and noble. One day the people will realise, the youth will realise, that our struggle is real, for our nation and religion.”

I did not steal, am victim of smear campaign: Najib
najib_8.jpg

New Straits Times
Datuk Seri Najib, seen here speaking in Pekan on Sunday (May 20), said that even though he handed over power smoothly, he was mistreated and put under immense pressure.
Published20 May, 2018
Updated 21 May, 2018
PEKAN — Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak on Sunday (May 20) denied stealing public funds and blamed voters for not appreciating his government’s contributions and believing his rivals’ falsehoods, striking a defiant tone days after investigators seeking evidence of corruption raided his home.

“I did not steal the people’s money,” said Datuk Seri Najib, 64, during a visit to Pekan, a constituency in Pahang he has represented as Member of Parliament since 1976.

"The people of Pekan know I did not steal. For 42 years I have served the people here,” he added to members of the Pekan United Malays National Organisation (Umno) branch during a meeting he officiated.

The former Umno president maintained that his party and the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition did no wrong.

He insisted that the country’s progress and development were results of Umno's and BN’s efforts and maintained that both had conducted themselves with civility and courtesy during their unsuccessful general election campaign.

Among others, he listed the aid given to fishermen, farmers, smallholders, Malaysians in general through the 1Malaysia People’s Aid programme and pay hikes for civil servants as evidence of such efforts.

“Unfortunately, what we have done, our contributions, did not receive the appropriate appreciation,” he said.

He also accused his political rivals of fighting not based on policies or ideas, but of using negative campaigning targeting him.

“I am not upset over our defeat in GE14 as the people had made their choice and we must adhere to the decision. What makes me sad was that the defeat is due to the smear campaign aimed at tarnishing the BN leadership ... especially my family and me who were continuously attacked with various accusations,” said Datuk Seri Najib, who stepped down as Umno president and BN chairman shortly after the election.

“Besides that they (Pakatan Harapan) also made various promises including the moon and stars .... promises that cannot be fullfiled but that is what they (voters) wanted to hear and decided to choose them.”

He also questioned the allegations made against his administration such as those claiming the country was nearing bankruptcy or already bankrupt.

Datuk Seri Najib noted that the Bank Negara Malaysia quarterly announcement shortly after the general election showed that the country’s growth remained robust at 5.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2018.

“Ladies and gentleman, can it be that, in just three days, they turned the economy completely around?" he asked.

“Do they have a magic lamp? Aladdin’s lamp? That in three days, the country no longer needs saving?”

He said that if democracy was a contest of ideas, then the results of the election were not that of a democracy.

“Some said I will not hand over the power and instead cause trouble. I never had any intention to cause any problem but ensure a smooth transition,” he said.

“However when I handed the power smoothly I was instead mistreated and was under immense pressure. Whatever that occurred over the past few days was something unexpected including claims that I stole the people’s money,” he said.

Datuk Seri Najib described the current government’s pledge of implementing the rule of law as not being in line with its action towards him and his family members.

“At first they said they were adhering the ‘Rule of Law’... but do you all know what me, my wife and family members had been facing ... they checked my house and even took away the baby shoes. Even the marriage gifts were taken ...what is the connection between the marriage gifts or baby shoes with 1MDB,” he said.

Following a stunning victory in an election on May 9, the new government led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad has opened investigations into how billions of dollars allegedly disappeared from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), a state fund founded by Datuk Seri Najib.

The former prime minister, who has consistently denied any wrongdoing, and his wife, Ms Rosmah Mansor, have been barred from leaving the country.

Items seized by police from Mr Najib's residence and other locations linked to the couple included 284 boxes of designer handbags, including prized Birkin handbags from Hermes. Dozens of the luxury bags were filled with cash and jewellry.

Datuk Seri Najib and his wife had hit out at the media and police on Saturday over the way they handled the raid.

1MDB is under investigation in at least six countries, including the United States where authorities said 1MDB officials have allegedly laundered more than US$4.5 billion (S$6 billion) in funds through a complex web of opaque transactions and fraudulent shell companies.

Dr Mahathir had said this past week that he expected Datuk Seri Najib to face criminal charges soon.

“There were a lot of allegations made... I was the target because I was the prime minister and party president,” Datuk Seri Najib told his supporters in Pekan.

“So if my brand is weakened, then Umno's name will also be weakened. This is a political strategy."

He added that he was “amazed” that even though he was no longer the prime minister, many had turned up at the event in Pekan.

“I think this is the true spirit of Umno. Even though we are in tears... (and) power is no longer in our hands, no one can kill our spirit to fight on.” AGENCIES

KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 — Lawyer Syahredzan Johan pointed out to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today that he remains salaried as the Member of Parliament for Pekan, Pahang where he is currently visiting.

“Datuk Seri still gets a salary as the Pekan MP. Please do not liken yourself to those who are truly jobless. That is insulting,” he wrote on Twitter.

During the interview yesterday, Najib asserted that he was jobless when asked what his days were now like, after he led Barisan Nasional to its first and only general election defeat.

He said he would periodically issue his views on the country’s direction, but asked to be given time to “sort out [his] personal side first.”

Najib’s mansion in Taman Duta here has been repeatedly visited by commercial crime investigators searching for evidence in a money-laundering investigation linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said he expects to charge Najib over the 1MDB corruption scandal soon.

Sexbot creators, RealBotix, are hoping to stimulate the female market with its latest offering – a 5'11" male sexbot called Henry, who promises not only ‘superhuman’ sexual performance but also loving companionship.
The hunky robot is being developed to apparently give women what they want – and not just in the bedroom. Henry will be programmed to listen to you talk about your day, remember your hopes and fears, and cuddle you.

Founder of RealBotix, Matt McMullen, told Wired that this extra layer of companionship particularly appeals to women, citing above-average interest in ‘Henry’ since plans were unveiled earlier this year.

Less than 10 percent of the company’s 300 to 400 orders a year go to women or couples, McMullen said, adding that inquiries about Henry have been notably higher.

One question women jokingly asked about the sexbot was whether he could take out the trash. This is still some way off, however, as McMullen’s team are still trying to work out how to make Henry walk and talk at the same time.

RealBotix created Henry with the aim of representing both genders and putting an end to complaints that the company was objectifying women.

Henry is due to go on sale next year at a retail price of between $11,000 and $15,000, depending on optional extras. His silicone body, which weighs only six stone (38 kilograms) is anatomically correct and his manhood can be made to order.

Prospective love interests can then interact with Henry through an app, by which he will crack jokes, recite poetry, and whisper sweet nothings in your ear.

While Henry may already sound like the ideal man to many, he can be customized even further to satisfy more unusual kinks, such as adding elf ears or vampire teeth. The company also offers 13 different kinds of pubic hair and dozens of nipples, including replicas of porn star Stormy Daniels’ breasts for its sexbots.

Haha the so-called sex video title is misleading though. The old fart couldn't even get the woman wet, and decided that he would just ask the woman to blow till he cums. Another reason why women shouldn't fuck w old farts!
