I have met so many volunteers, working their guts out. They cannot be doing this for the government or the ministers," Dr Balakrishnan added.

"I know they are doing this because they are quietly proud of Singapore and what it represents, and because they want to reach out to fellow Singaporeans and the rest of the world that the athletes represent.

The love of labour and the dignity of self-sacrifice shall always be exhorted.

The Internationale
The Internationale (L'Internationale in French) is a famous socialist, communist, social-democratic and anarchist anthem.

The Internationale became the anthem of international socialism, and gained particularly notoriety under the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1944, when it was that communist state's de facto national anthem. Its original French refrain is C'est la lutte finale / Groupons-nous et demain / L'Internationale / Sera le genre humain. (Freely translated: "This is the final struggle / Let us group together and tomorrow / The Internationale / Will be the human race.")

The Internationale has been translated into many of the world's languages. It is sung traditionally with the hand raised in a clenched fist salute. The Internationale is sung not only by socialists but also by communists or social democrats, as well as anarchists.
