Singapore officials will go to Hong Kong next month to study the territory's rental flat system.
Senior Minister of State (National Development and Education) Grace Fu will lead the delegation, accompanied by MPs on the Government Parliamentary Committee for National Development.

The visit comes amid a review of the eligibility criteria for HDB rental flats.

The Hong Kong Housing Authority handles 670,000 rental flats for two million people, about one-third of its population.

National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan told reporters yesterday that some who rent flats here own cars, have maids and money to install air conditioning.

Another group is those eyeing a flat, blaming their children for kicking them out. But when contacted, the children will deny it, saying: 'My mother doesn't want to stay with me. She wants her own place. She wants more freedom.'

Perhaps these are the people who sold their HDB flats to realise the profits and use it to fund their retirements.

There are many who are compelled to buy HDB flats because it is the only viable option left, even though the flats may not be affordable to them. So when they are old, they may also need to sell their flats for a profit and rent a cheap flat from HDB in order to retire. They will be eligible by then.

See how policy makers work? They just go to another place to copy the system and modify it.

No information is given on age profiles, races, average household sizes, average household incomes etc of the total applicants for rental flats.

I'm sure HDB has such info but didnt want to release it.

Those who are rich shdn't be confined to 5-rm flat and below. What's wrong for those who prefer quality of life instead? Govt shd considered provide rented-flat and smaller flat to the rich as long as the flats are not subsidized.
Rich or poor, they shd given a choice, instead of based on their income.

On behalf of the PAP, Grace Fu and Marlboro Tan sincerely thank all Singaporeans their support, generosity and willingness to pay for their holidays.

What's wrong with rental flat tenants installing air conditioning..? May be air-conds are installed for medical reason? Some elderly folks have sensitive skin disease and may have installed the air-cond on doctor's advice? Also maid may be employed by their children to look after the elderly people..
