Vincent Wijeysingha's excellent background piece on that strike

A real pity VW wasn't elected into parliament. Intellectually, he is far ahead of many MPs and ministers. Comes across as someone genuine unlike the many fake products in parliament.

Intellectually he is indeed weighty. Unfortunately, he was smeared by the gay issue at the last GE. I doubt he will ever be elected as the MSM will remind voters. SDP appears blighted by these issues.

VW not even addressing the root of the problem which is artificially low bus and train fares.
The people threatened the govt into not raising fares. It was a case of armlocked position for the govt, increase fares and lose votes no matter what.
The people say can increase fare provided improve services which means increase 10% fare must also increase 20% work output which in effect a pay cut in actual per hour terms. Where is the avenue for redress?

JUST RAISE THE BUS FARES, AND STOP WHINING, WE ARE USED TO IT...RAISE, RAISE to improve..what is new??

SDP is the only party with the gumption to take on less-than-white members into their fold. kudos to chee.

What you say is true. But the issue is not what SDP wants but what the majority of voters want. Does SDP really want to get back in parliament?

This is Screwball? that's sad.....

Yes indeed O wise one. are all sinkies agreeable? Is welfare vw agreeable?

Actually raising fares is a good thing, it teaches us to be thrifty. Travelling short distances that can be covered by "bus number 11", we don't board the bus, for example, your home is three or four bus stops to Interchange & MRT Station...save money.

I am happy if they keep raising fees, it will keep us all in our spurs, be wise in our spending & learn to save & be thrifty. We will relearn from our fathers time of eating at home, walk where possible, spend when necessary.

RAISE RAISE RAISE, GOOD FOR US!

I dun need rising back to teach me a lesson.

This statement is for coward sinkies who got no balls to protest, then come up with some sinkie self-justification for their cowardice shame.

Just raise..raise, it is the season for raising..tra la la la la la la!! RAISE ! RAISE ! RAISE...what's it got to do with balls??

This, right here, is the crux of the issue.

If you want to give workers a raise, do it with no strings attached, no fine print and no secret clauses.

When it comes to measuring one's earning power, only the statistic of the hourly wage matters. The component of time should never be removed from calculations.

For example, theoretically you may be able to earn $3k doing that dishwasher job at Sakae Sushi. But you have to clock 72 hours a week... which means your hourly wage is really pittance. There is an intrinsic economic value to your time too. Few people understand that.

More moronic wisdom from opposition supporting retards.

@ $3K a month, 72hr a week the wage works up to $10 an hour.

SDP's GE2011 proposal was only a minimum wage of $6.80 an hour. SDP is even more pathetic than the Sakae Sushi owner

That is minimum, not a must to be at minimum. And nobody work 72 hours per week. What a sinkie low life moron, you mean your master expect the people here to have no life and just work till death.

I feel extremely humbled when I read Mr wijeysingha's article.

A lot of us have been blindsided by xenophobia and government propaganda.

We missed the truths because we allowed ourselves to become distracted and divided.

Definitely more incisive and in-depth than any of GMS's gibberish.

That is an interesting point. Do most voters read anything longer than a para?

It depends generally on 2 things - the author or the first few lines. Most discerning individuals can spot a good thing after looking at the first few lines.

And? A contract is a contract. The peasantry workers have to honour it. Either you drive the bus or get lost.

And SMRT violated the contract; SMRT was obligated to provide acceptable lodgings but failed to do so. When SMRT turned a deaf ear to the complaints, the PRC workers have every right to go on strike as a means to escalate the issue. They did not drag the protest out once their issues were made public.

I hope the Chinese government slams the PAP government for exploiting the PRC workers and demand that the punishment meted out to be withdrawn or face retaliation.

SMRT screwed up. That's the fact. As SMRT does its spin, those revelations show that SMRT failed its contractual obligation and tried to ignore the issues.
