CONTROL units, sensors and other parts started disappearing from excavators parked at construction sites around Singapore over the last three weeks.
On Wednesday, the thieves almost made it out of the country with their loot - worth some $100,000.
But just as they were about to check in for their flight to Hanoi, the two Vietnamese men were nabbed at Changi Airport's Terminal 3.
Yesterday, the Commander of Tanglin Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Koh Yak Leng, said the men belonged to a foreign syndicate believed to be responsible for series of 11 cases of such thefts here.
When they were caught, they had with them two carry-on bags weighing about 20kg each. Stuffed inside were six control units, two magnetic coils, 11 sensors, three hydraulic pumps, two meters and four connectors, all stolen from excavators.
Most of the diggers had been left unguarded and unsecured, and some were even left by the roadside, said AC Koh.
