Strategic Importance
Kharg Island is often called Iran's "Crown Jewel" or "Economic Jugular Vein" for several reasons:
- Oil Hub: It handles roughly 90% of Iran's crude oil exports.
- Deep Water Port: Unlike much of Iran's shallow coastline, the deep waters around Kharg allow "supertankers" to dock directly at its jetties.
- Storage Capacity: The island can store up to 30 million barrels of oil and load multiple tankers simultaneously.
- Primary Buyer: Most of the oil exported from Kharg is bound for China, which accounts for about 11.6% of China's seaborne imports so far in 2026.
- Global Oil Crisis: Analysts warn that if the oil infrastructure is eventually targeted, it could remove up to 2 million barrels per day from the global market, potentially causing oil prices to spiral "out of control".
- Iranian Retaliation: The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has threatened to reduce regional U.S.-linked oil facilities to "a pile of ashes" if their own energy sites are attacked.
- U.S. Ground Action: There is growing speculation that the U.S. may attempt to seize and occupy the island to gain total leverage over Iran's economy.
