An elderly woman in Taiwan, who was recently caught in a viral video being kicked by a fellow commuter on an MRT train, has found herself in the spotlight again after being arrested for shop theft.

According to Focus Taiwan, the 73-year-old woman, who goes by the surname Tseng, was arrested on the morning of Oct. 1 at a convenience store on Yanping North Road in Taipei, Taiwan on a warrant for larceny.

History of theft

Videos of Tseng being hauled away by police officers, which were posted to social media, showed her clad in the same outfit and carrying the same bag as she did on the train.

The Datong Precinct of Taipei's Police Department confirmed the arrest in a statement, stating that she would be taken for questioning and turned over to prosecutors in Shilin District.

She was apparently caught after "causing a commotion" inside the convenience store, Focus Taiwan said.

The warrant for her arrest reportedly came after she was sentenced to 55 days in prison for theft in June, but failed to report to prison.

Several local media outlets reported that she had also previously been arrested and jailed for shoplifting incidents in 2023.

MRT incident

Tseng went viral on social media a day before her arrest (Sep. 30) after an altercation between her and another commuter on the Red Line of the Taipei Metro made the rounds on social media.

In it, Tseng could be seen swinging her bag at the commuter, who was allegedly sitting in a priority seat.

The commuter then handed their bag off to another passenger, and Tseng struck them again.

The commuter then stood up and kicked her, sending her reeling into the opposite row of seats.

After recovering, Tseng threatened to call the police while the commuter dared her to "try one more time".

Another commuter later intervened and a station manager helped resolve the issue, the metro operator said.

The line's operations were not affected and neither of the individuals pressed charges.

However, the Taipei Police Department's Rapid transit Division said it was planning to summon Tseng and the younger commuter for questioning over the suspected violation of the Social Order Maintenance Act for their behaviours, according to Focus Taiwan
