SINGAPORE: The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) advises consumers who may have "VIA.X For Men" to stop taking the product immediately.
In a statement on Monday, HSA said the product contained undeclared ingredients that could cause adverse reactions, although no reports of such reactions have been received so far.
It added that the local distributor of the product, Nature's Farm, has also made a voluntary recall of the product from the market.
During HSA's routine product quality surveillance of health products, samples of "VIA.X For Men" were tested and found to be adulterated.
The samples were found to contain undeclared potent ingredients, sildenafil and propoxyphenyl sildenafil.
The product, sold locally at Nature's Farm outlets and selected medical halls, claims to contain only natural ingredients, including Red Algae Peptide Hydrolysate, Pycnogenol, L-Arginine and Zinc Gluconate.
It is marketed as "a premium proprietary blend of scientifically proven ingredients specially made to boost performance and satisfaction".
HSA said sildenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction and should only be used when prescribed by a doctor.
Its usage without proper medical advice and close supervision can cause serious adverse reactions such as decreased or loss of vision and hearing, low blood pressure and other cardiovascular events such as stroke and myocardial infarction.
In addition, sildenafil is not suitable for patients with some medical conditions including certain heart problems or patients who are taking heart medications such as nitrates.
Propoxyphenyl sildenafil is a chemically related compound of sildenafil.
It is not approved for use as a medicinal ingredient and could cause adverse effects which are similar to those of sildenafil.
HSA advises those with any remaining supplies of "VIA.X For Men" to stop taking the product immediately.
And those who have taken the product should seek medical attention if they are feeling unwell or are concerned about their health.
HSA said Nature's Farm is working with it to investigate this matter.
Members of the public may contact Nature's Farm at 6744 1865 if they have queries on the voluntary recall.
