NATURAL BORN ENTERTAINER Paul Cheong, that's the trademark of what He is all about. He attributes his experiences to holding a myriad of jobs in the various fields of entertainment, events and media that had his career stretching a span of 38 years and sees no end in sight.
Paul started his showbiz career almost parallel to his radio personality DJ days on the radio and TV (Radio Malaysia Blue Network), TCS/SBC Radio, Redifussion (cable) and NTUC Radio Heart 91.3FM through popular sponsored programmes - this spanned from 1972 till 1998. The year he started being a DJ, Fanfare Magazine, a teenage periodical in 1972 voted Paul Cheong "the most popular DJ of the year". He beat 20 other DJs in Singapore and Malaysia to earn the coveted title.
His success was almost instantaneous with his unrepeatable distinguished voice, charismatic personality - with brooding good looks to boot! He became a popular radio personality, was a much sought-after master of ceremonies, stage performer and recording star. The sight of his extraordinary energy on stage coupled with his flamboyant image, refreshing performance, kept him an all-round performing star.
So while the 70's kept him busy in this avenue, he also found the time and energy to host and appear on numerous television musical shows, notably the Hagemeyer Special. In the 90's, he also appeared on many episodes of Rolling Good Times.
In the late 70's, PolyGram signed Paul on to record his two best selling pop rock albums which were recorded in Hong Kong. The self titled eponymous album PAUL CHEONG sold more than 20,000 copies of albums and cassettes in the region. This morphed pirated copies that spun 12 versions of cassettes in Singapore and around the region. Paul has also appeared on many PolyGram compilation albums, including 'World Music Festivals'. he recorded a song for 'The Police & Friends' album. In the mid-80's, an album called 'Chances' was released for the Singapore market. A cover version of the international hit 'We are the World' was sung by the most popular DJs of the time. Paul sang the opening lead vocal.
Paul Cheong enjoys a remarkable career combined with his natural ability to take to task any stage. He is always creative, be it Stage Shows, Gala Balls, Special Events, Dinner & Dance, Multimedia, Songwriting, TV Shows, Radio or Recording star and more recently Cruise Ships. Paul has done it all with Striking Success. He has taken his art form abroad as well, namely ; Kota Kinabaru, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Malacca(Malaysia) /Jarkarta, Bandung, Bali(Indonesia) / Phuket, Bangkok(Thailand) /Manila(Philippines) / Bangalore(India) / Hong Kong /Taipei(Taiwan) / Perth, Sydney(Australia) / Wales (UK). Critics who attended the shows commented "Excellent - Great Barn-stormer of a gig - The atmosphere/energy is awesome and amazing".
The longevity and growth of Paul Cheong's career is exceptional. He has definite staying power, as his track record shows the never ending requests to do all round shows.
His sheer achievements, in which he played a vital role in the evolution of popular contemporary music as DJ on radio shows and as Master of ceremonies cum Entertainer at various shows spanning the pop rock era of the 70s, 80s and 90s and into the new millennium, is in itself a brilliant and amazing musical journey!
Special mention should be made of the fact that he was dubbed the "Cliff Richard of Singapore" with his voice being identical to the star's. Paul dismissed the title! But this inspired him to come up with a special concept tribute dubbed "Golden Years of Cliff Richard", a brilliantly produced show whereby Paul sings the greatest hits of Cliff Richard. Judy Walker, a British journalist, who attended a concert in Singapore, quoted in her column on 17th August 1982 in the New Nation newspaper that "if you had shut your eyes, listening to Paul's 'The Young ones', 'Please Don't Tease' and 'When The Girl in Your Arms'; you could easily have imagined it was Cliff on stage". A real compliment to Paul.
He has contributed to the National Heritage Board, singing for the Heritage Fest in 1997 and 2002. Being a Catholic/Christian, he has lifted his voice for the churches of St Joseph (Portuguese Mission), our Lady of Lourdes, Immaculate Heart of Mary and St Mary of the Angels at various benefits including Christmas when requested to perform at these charity stage shows.
Paul Cheong commands a stage presence like no other, and is thoroughly professional. He delivers in every performance backed by state-of-the-art technology to create nothing less than an excellent show each occassion. Paul is driven, determined and disciplined. His healthy enthusiasm, stage dynamo and distinguished voice, (a voice better than most), unchanged by time, allows him to continue honing his craft.
