A possible leak of radioactive steam forced a shutdown of Unit 3 at California's San Onofre nuclear power plant.

(CNN) -- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will investigate a possible leak of radioactive steam that forced a unit shutdown at a California plant.
The operators of the San Onofre nuclear generating station near San Diego shut down a unit Tuesday afternoon after a sensor detected the possible release.
"The potential leak poses no imminent danger to the public or plant workers," Southern California Edison said in a statement. "There has been no release to the atmosphere."
The possible leak was reported in a steam generator tube, prompting the full shutdown of Unit 3, company spokeswoman Jennifer Manfre said.
In November, an ammonia leak triggered an alert at the same facility.
The chemical was leaking from the steam system that drives turbines at Unit 3, company spokesman Charles Coleman said at the time.
There were no injuries.

ROSEMEAD, Calif., Jan 31, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Southern California Edison (SCE), operator of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, has begun a precautionary shutdown of Unit 3 because sensors installed for this purpose detected a possible leak in one of the unit's steam generator tubes.
The potential leak poses no imminent danger to the public or plant workers. There has been no release to the atmosphere. San Onofre personnel will evaluate the cause of the leak and the steps required to repair it and resume operations.
Unit 2 is currently offline for a planned maintenance, refueling and technology upgrade outage. Southern California Edison has ample reserve power to meet customer needs while Unit 3 is offline.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission was immediately informed of this development.
