（中央社伊拉克摩蘇爾21日綜合外電報導）伊拉克摩蘇爾地區一條水位高漲的河流今天發生渡輪沉沒事故，近100人喪生，罹難者大多是婦孺。船上搭載慶祝庫德族新年的家庭，未料遇上伊拉克近年來最嚴重的意外。
伊拉克從聖戰團體伊斯蘭國（IS）手中收復北部城市摩蘇爾（Mosul）後，居民今年才恢復在底格里斯河（Tigris）沿岸的年度慶祝活動，如今發生這起意外，讓人無限感傷。
伊拉克總理馬帝（Adel Abdel Mahdi）在視察事故現場時，宣布舉國哀悼3天。他下令迅速展開調查「以釐清責任」。

Nearly 100 people were killed and most of the victims were women and children. The family carrying the celebration of the Kurdish New Year on board did not expect to meet Iraq’s most serious accidents in recent years.

After Iraq’s recovery of the northern city of Mosul from the jihadist group Islamic State (IS), residents have only resumed their annual celebrations along the Tigris River. This accident is now infinitely sentimental.

When Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi inspected the scene of the accident, he declared the country to mourn for three days. He ordered a quick investigation to "clarify the responsibility".

The ferry was overloaded with men, women and children, and the ship crossed the Tigris River and headed to the popular picnic area to celebrate the Nowruz, the Kurdish New Year and the symbol of the beginning of spring in the Iraqi region. When the shipwreck occurred, it also coincided with Iraq’s Mother’s Day.

According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of the Interior, 94 people were killed and 55 others were rescued. Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan said earlier that at least 19 children were killed. The Prime Minister said that 61 women were killed.

Mosul security sources said that the water level was high and the ship was overloaded, which led to the disaster, and the number of people on board was far more than 100. Another security official in Mosul told AFP: "The ship sinks because there are too many passengers boarding the ship."

The Iraqi Ministry of Justice said it had ordered the arrest of nine ferry companies and prohibited shipowners and tourist attractions from leaving the country.

The authorities have warned the public to be cautious because the heavy rains caused the Mosul dam to flood and the river level rose.

The films on the social media show rushing rivers, many floating on the water, or trying to swim near the partially submerged hull.

A person who was on board said that the ship was overturned in the middle of the river.
