A group of US lawmakers have called for strategic dialogue with Moscow. They feel that the matter is “more urgent” following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s unveiling of a number of cutting-edge weapons systems.
“A US-Russia Strategic Dialogue is more urgent following President Putin’s public address on March 1st when he referred to several new nuclear weapons Russia is reportedly developing, including a cruise missile and a nuclear underwater drone,” a letter signed by US Senators Edward J. Markey (D-MA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) reads.

‘Listen to us now’: Putin unveils new Russian nuclear arsenal
The letter, addressed to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, was published on Thursday. The senators stressed that while the countries have many “significant” disagreements, including alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US elections and the “annexation” of Crimea, Moscow and Washington need to come to the negotiation table.

“Due to these policy rifts, not in spite of them… the United States should urgently engage with Russia to avoid miscalculation and reduce the likelihood of conflict.”

The lawmakers are concerned that some of the brand-new Russian nuclear weapons are not covered by the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, commonly known as the New START, and thus call for the agreement to be extended. The weapons in question include a cruise missile with virtually no range limit and a nuclear-powered underwater drone.

There had been rumors that the Russian and American top diplomats, Sergey Lavrov and Rex Tillerson respectively, may meet while they are both in Africa. However, the US State Department denied that there had been any discussion of possible bilateral talks. When asked about it, the Russian Foreign Minister said the claims that such discussions never happened are “untrue.”

On March 1, the Russian leader presented a set of advanced Russian nuclear weapons, some of which are not yet named. During his state of the nation address, Putin stressed that Russia would not need all these new weapons had its legitimate concerns been heeded by the US and its allies. “Nobody wanted to talk to us about the root of the problem. Nobody listened to us; so listen to us now!” he said.

The speech drew a hysterical reaction from the Western media and accusations of saber-rattling and starting “a new arms race,” Putin told NBC Washington was in fact to blame for it. The Russian president referred to the US decision to withdraw from the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM Treaty) back in 2002.

Democrat Senators urge strategic nuclear arms talks with Russia
In a letter addressed to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, several Democrat senators urge arms agreement talks to resume following revelation of advanced new Russian weapons systems

On March 8, 2018, a group of US Senators – all liberals – signed onto a letter drafted to the US Secretary of State urging the Trump Administration to begin new talks with the Russian Federation about the state of affairs between the two countries regarding nuclear weapons without delay.

The letter makes reference to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s March 1 speech in his State of the Nation address in Moscow, in which a whole array of new, and highly advanced weaponry was announced to Russia and to the world. This weaponry includes hypersonic weapons and nuclear powered weapons possessing unlimited range and endurance, as well as the perfection of an ICBM that can hit the US from any direction.

However, the letter unfortunately beats the same tired narrative used by most of the elected leadership in Washington – that Russia stands guilty of invading Ukraine, forcibly taking over Crimea, destabilizing relations in Syria and of course, interfering in the American elections:

A U.S. – Russia Strategic Dialogue is more urgent following President Putin’s public address on March 1st when he referred to several new nuclear weapons Russia is reportedly developing including a cruise missile and a nuclear underwater drone, which are not currently limited by the New START treaty, and would be destabilizing if deployed. There is no doubt we have significant disagreements with Russia, including Russia’s brazen interference in the 2016 U.S. elections; continued violation of the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF); invasion of Ukraine and illegal annexation of Crimea; and destabilizing actions in Syria. However, it is due to these policy rifts, not in spite of them, that the United States should urgently engage with Russia to avoid miscalculation and reduce the likelihood of conflict.”

The Democrat Party has an acquired reputation for trying to make deals with communist or other repressive régimes. While Russia in the present day is neither one of these, here the issue that may cause problems is the premise stated in the paragraph above. In this, of course, the establishment is rather entrenched in its point of view.

Russia Today (RT.com) pointed out the roots of the problem from the Russian point of view:

On March 1, the Russian leader presented a set of advanced Russian nuclear weapons, some of which are not yet named. During his state of the nation address, Putin stressed that Russia would not need all these new weapons had its legitimate concerns been heeded by the US and its allies. “Nobody wanted to talk to us about the root of the problem. Nobody listened to us; so listen to us now!” he said.

“The speech drew a hysterical reaction from the Western media and accusations of saber-rattling and starting “a new arms race,” Putin told NBC Washington was in fact to blame for it. The Russian president referred to the US decision to withdraw from the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM Treaty) back in 2002.”

‘Rich guys love rockets’: These are all the rockets Trump just showed off during a cabinet meeting

  • President Donald Trump held a televised cabinet meeting on Thursday morning.
  • During the meeting, Trump showed off models of rockets and spaceships, which were designed by NASA, United Launch Alliance, and SpaceX.
  • Trump described the recent launch of SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket as “amazing” and “beautiful.”
During a White House cabinet meeting on Thursday, President Donald Trump took a moment to put rockets on the table – literally.

“Before me are some rocket ships. You haven’t seen that in this country in a long time,” Trump said, likely referring to the fact that NASA has relied on Russian Soyuz rockets to fly astronauts to the International Space Station since the retirement of its space shuttle in 2011 (and at ever-increasing costs).

“Many of the jobs we’re doing are privately financed,” Trump added. “You know, rich guys – they love rocket ships. And that’s good. That’s better than us paying for it.”

On the table were three large models of competing rockets that may soon carry astronauts to space – perhaps to the moon or Mars – and a small model of the space station.

At the far right (from this perspective) was an older model of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. Newer, up-to-date models feature grid fins on the rocket’s boosters, which help the boosters land so they can get reused for another launch.

SpaceX founder Elon Musk has said the company is shifting resources away from its Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets to develop a vehicle to replace all of its launchers. The forthcoming Big Falcon Rocket could tower 348 feet and carry a huge reusable, refuelable spaceship that could go anywhere in the solar system.

The second rocket from the right is the United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rocket, with a CST-100 Starliner space capsule (made by Boeing) on top.

A powerful version of the Atlas V will soon be used to launch astronauts to the space station, and it can lift about half as much mass into orbit as ULA’s biggest rocket: The Delta IV Heavy. However, SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket just eclipsed ULA’s Delta IV Heavy two-fold in terms of the payload it can lift. Each Delta Heavy launch also costs about four times as much as a Falcon Heavy. To compete with SpaceX, ULA is working on a sub-$100-million launcher with reusable parts, called Vulcan.

At far left was the first iteration of NASA’s gigantic Space Launch System.

Testing for that rocket is moving along, and many years from now, it may tower above and outdo all other rockets ever built – at least in terms of power and lift capability. But NASA has already spent about $23 billion on the project, and will need more than $210 billion in funding to reach Mars with the launcher, according to the Office of Inspector General. And that’s not even to set foot on the planet’s surface – just orbit it. (Though the first Mars astronauts might explore the moon Phobos.)

After showing off the models, Trump took a moment to remark on what he thought of Falcon Heavy’s launch on February 6.

That rocket is now most powerful in the world today, and two of its 16-story reusable boosters successfully flew back to Earth and landed smoothly on the ground.

“To me that was more amazing than watching the rocket go up,” Trump said. “I’ve never seen that before. […] Without wings, without anything, they landed so beautifully.”

Trump said the Falcon Heavy launch cost $80 million, though that’s not quite correct. He was likely referring to the $90 million price that SpaceX plans to charge customers for a launch of the rocket. Musk said Falcon Heavy’s development cost totaled more than $500 million.

“We’re really at the forefront, and we’re doing it in a very private manner. At the same time, NASA is very much involved in doing their own projects,” Trump said. “We’ll be sending something very beautiful to Mars in the very near future.”

Trump may have been referring to NASA’s Mars InSight lander, which is slated to land on the red planet in November. The earliest SpaceX may attempt to reach Mars would be in 2022, with NASA hoping to send people to the red planet in the 2030s.

A previous version of this story incorrectly listed the name of the second rocket. It is an Atlas V, not a Delta IV Heavy. Also, Falcon Heavy launched on Feb. 6, 2018 – not February 2. We regret the errors.

Russia 'test-fires hypersonic Kinzhal missile'

Media captionRussia's defence ministry released footage of the Kinzhal missile test-launch
Russia says it has successfully test-launched a hypersonic missile, one of a range of nuclear-capable weapons announced by President Vladimir Putin earlier this month.

The country's defence ministry released video footage showing the missile detaching from a fighter jet and leaving a fiery trail behind it.

It said the intended target was hit.

On 1 March, Mr Putin described the Kinzhal missile - named for a type of dagger - as "an ideal weapon".

He said it was part of a new stockpile of "invincible" weapons.

The Kinzhal is said to travel at 10 times the speed of sound and have a range of 2,000km (1,200 miles).

The defence ministry said the missile was launched from a MiG-31 jet that took off from an airfield in south-west Russia on Saturday.

"The launch went according to plan, the hypersonic missile hit its target," the ministry said.

Mr Putin is widely expected to be re-elected as Russia's president in a week's time.

As part of his annual state of the nation speech on 1 March, he played a video graphic that appeared to show missiles raining down on the US state of Florida.

The US state department said this was not "the behaviour of a responsible international player".
