The U.S. Navy has conducted its first test of a new hypersonic missile.

The test was announced by Vice Adm. Terry Benedict, the director of the Strategic Systems Program (SSP), at the Naval Submarine League’s annual symposium in Arlington, Virginia, on November 2. “I’m very proud to report that at 0300 on Monday night SSP flew from Hawaii [Pacific Missile Range Facility] . . . the first conventional prompt strike missile for the United States Navy in the form factor that would eventually, could eventually be utilized if leadership chooses to do so in an Ohio-class tube,” Benedict said, according U.S. Naval Institute News, which first reported his remarks. “It’s a monumental achievement.”

Benedict refused to provide any other details of the test, but a Pentagon spokesperson later gave additional information when contacted by U.S. Naval Institute News. “The Navy Strategic Systems Program (SSP), on behalf of the Department of Defense, conducted an Intermediate Range Conventional Prompt Strike Flight Experiment-1 (CPS FE-1) test on Oct. 30, 2017, from Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai, Hawaii,” said Cmdr. Patrick Evans, the Pentagon spokesperson. “The test collected data on hypersonic boost-glide technologies and test-range performance for long-range atmospheric flight. This data will be used by the Department of Defense to anchor ground testing, modeling, and simulation of hypersonic flight vehicle performance and is applicable to a range of possible Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) concepts.”

Hypersonic missiles are defined as those traveling at speeds between Mach 5 and Mach 10. That is, between 3,106 and 15,534 miles per hour, or one to five miles per second. China, Russia and the United States are all currently investing heavily in hypersonics, while a few other countries are also exploring the technology to a much lesser degree.

The are two basic types of hypersonic missiles. The first are called hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs). HGVs are launched into the atmosphere from a rocket and glide to their targets at altitudes ranging from forty kilometers to higher than one hundred kilometers. These HGVs typically fly at faster speeds than the second type of hypersonic missiles, hypersonic cruise missiles (HCMs). As their name suggests, HCMs are cruise missiles that fly at hypersonic speeds. During their entire flight, they are powered by rockets or high-speed jet engines, like scramjets.

The United States is seeking to develop both kinds of hypersonic missiles. For instance, the Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC) program, which is a joint DARPA/U.S. Air Force (USAF) effort, is seeking to develop a HCM. On the other hand, the Tactical Boost Glide (TBG) program, also a joint DARPA/U.S. Air Force (USAF) effort, is working on HGV technology.

The U.S. Navy test would have been of the latter variety and, as Benedict noted, is part of the ongoing conventional prompt global strike (CPGS) program. That program aims to give the United States the capability to conduct a precision strike on any place on earth within an hour. Interest in CPGS dates back to the 2001 Nuclear Posture Review (NPR). Since that time, the Department of Defense and all the military services have explored various technologies for achieving that capability.

For its part, the U.S. Navy began exploring a submarine-launched intermediate-range ballistic missile (SLIRBM) to fulfill the CPGS mission around 2003. These efforts continued until Congress cut off funding for it in 2008 (all CPGS funding was combined in a single DOD-wide account instead of individual programs within the services). Still, the U.S. Navy expressed renewed interest in acquiring a sea-based CPGS capabilities around the time of the pivot to Asia in 2012. In early 2014, as I noted at the Diplomat at the time, the U.S. Navy began accepting industry proposals for submarine-launched hypersonic capabilities.

This effort got a boost later that same year, after the U.S. Army’s Advanced Hypersonic Weapon program hit a snag when its second test failed. After that, according to the trade publication Inside Defense, “The Pentagon's acquisition directorate for strategic warfare then tapped the Navy to conduct the next test flight by modifying the Army-developed Advanced Hypersonic Weapon to fit in a submarine missile tube and launch the prototype weapon from a land-based test facility.” The recent test is the first milestone in the U.S. Navy’s stewardship of the program.

Flying at mach 5 speed on a globe earth? Ever ask them to prove

1. How the missle will tilt with the radius of the earth?

2. Where is the math curve to tilt the missle?

3. The earth spin at 170mph in globe earth so how it works?

Finally, sure or not the earth is globe round?

USA is behind Chinese and even Russian in hypersonic, even that they had began these research 1st. Pity. As time past they will lag further with an enlarged gap between US & Sino-Russian alliance.

It must be done by Ah-Neh with Scotch Tape Technology! LOL! KNN!

There is the total lack of Test successfully announcement meaning the test is most likely another failure. US already failed so many tests on hypersonic.

Why is US losing to China in hypersonic?

Because only Chinese uniquely own the MACH12 JF-12 hypersonic wind tunnel that can test top speed in the world and top duration length of tests. No other countries has it! Chinese got it fully tested working on the ground inside their tunnel 1st, and plus Chinese got the world's MOST POWERFUL SUPERCOMPUTER to Simulate Everything during the design, don't need to build so many prototypes to test in flight and do trial and error, like the pathetic bankrupted Ang Moh beggars!

Chinese scientists have claimed to be able to make more discoveries than their American counterpart in developing supersonic aircraft thanks to better equipment.

A secretive £5 million hypersonic wind tunnel, nicknamed 'Hyper Dragon', is helping the experts 'reveal many facts that Americans have not found out', one Chinese researcher said in a propaganda documentary.

The programme also revealed that Chinese scientists are developing a commercial plane that could connect Beijing and New York in just two hours.

Shrouded in secrecy, the JF12 shockwave hypersonic wind tunnel was completed in May, 2012, but has rarely been captured by media.

China Central Television, the state broadcaster, showed a glimpse of the mysterious equipment in a documentary on October 8.

Built by Chinese Academy of Science with 46 million Yuan (£5 million), the 2.5-metre-wide (8.2 feet), 265-metre-long (869 feet) tunnel is said to be able to blow gusts of wind as fast as 10 times the speed of sound.

The temperature of the gusts could reach a staggering 3,000 degrees Celsius.

Jiang Zonglin, a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Science, called the 'unprecedented' wind tunnel an incubator of advanced aircraft.

Mr Jiang said because planes couldn't fly during a lab experiment, they would need a wind tunnel that could generate gusts as fast as the desired speed of the aircraft to simulate a flying environment.

In the case of JF12, it could simulate flying conditions between Mach 5 and Mach 9.

The footage also shows a triangle supersonic aircraft being tested in the advanced wind tunnel

A researcher said the tunnel can help them 'reveal facts that Americans have not found out'

Mr Jiang claimed that he and his team carry out one experiment every two days, and each experiment last 100 millisecond, which equals to one-tenth of a second.

The researchers pointed out that China is currently developing a supersonic commercial plane that could travel as quickly as five times the speed of sound.

This means the aircraft would be able to fly from Beijing to New York in two hours, compared to the current 14 hours.

The TV clip apparently also shows an arrowhead-shaped model inside the Beijing-based wind tunnel.

Its design looks like official Chinese mock-ups of the DF-ZF, China's 7,680mph hypersonic strike aircraft that could carry nuclear warheads past US missile defenses.

Chinese officials have confirmed several test flights of hypersonic glide vehicles since 2013, but have kept the details top secret.

This is likely the first time China has shown any test models linked to the project.

Another supersonic aircraft apparently being developed by China has been shown in the video

Chinese state media has revealed the country's first ever images of a model (pictured) of its hypersonic glide vehicle, a nuclear weapons expert has claimed. The secretive missile delivery craft, known as the DF-ZF, could travel at up to ten times the speed of sound

The hypersonic strike aircraft is getting ready to be launched into the 265-metre-long tunnel

In addition, The broadcast showed a weapon with a shape similar to the last stage of a ballistic missile, and computer generated images of a new triangular-framed glider.

Raymond Wang, an expert in stopping the international spread of nuclear weapons, from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, California, was one of the first to spot the DF-ZF model.

Writing on Twitter, he noted the programme's narrator didn't specifically refer to hypersonic boost-glide vehicles (HBGVs) or the DF-ZF at any point.

Raymond Wang, an expert in stopping the international spread of nuclear weapons from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, California, was one of the first to spot the DF-ZF model

'China just showed its hypersonic-BGV in a vid on 08 Oct. Probably a test design model, but AFAIK [as far as I know] this is first pics of an actual object,' he wrote.

'Vid is about JF-12 hypersonic testing tunnel. Narrator never explicitly says its HBGV. Resembles mock-ups of WU-14.

'Not an expert, cannot tell if useful info. BUT WATCHING PROPAGANDA IS IMPORTANT.'

Mr Wang said the wind tunnel shown in the clip has sharper angles than any known models of the Chinese design.

The chinks always had the tech edge against their neighbours for centuries, yet they were overran twice by bushwhackers from the north riding on ponies. The chinks had rockets, crossbows, gunpowder, superior armour and numbers, and yet they always lose.

If you are betting on the chinks simply because you are a chink, then you must be prepared to lose your pants.

Any regime will fall when they are too civilized that is why we have to adopt barbarism and be very brutal.

China was once ruled by Mongolian Genghis Khan but grand children of Genghis Khan are now ruled by Chinese in turn, after his 元 dynasty fell again to Chinese hands. China was also once ruled by Manchurian 努尔哈赤(:ᠨᡠᡵᡤᠠᠴᡳ) but Chinese again fell his dynasty and his grand children is today ruled by Chinese.

In this way of flip-flop power changing hands, territory of China EXPANDED.

Ang Moh already had invaded and looted during opium war and 八国联军, and now their time to payback is very close.

They owe Chinese huge debts and unable to pay in a matter of time.

Next Chairman after Xi, would have to invade all their Ang Moh homelands and make them repay their huge debts by ceded sovereignty. Capture their people as slave to work their ass to pay for debts they owe, like they way African Niggers were treated by Ang Mohs. African Nigger did not even owe Ang Moh a single cent. KNN!

I still cannot wrap my mind around how the fuck the Chink can get Mach 12 wind tunnel , that the wind blows down at Mach 12.

Let us talk of a modern artillery gun , or tank 120mm gun. When when the round is fired, the gas expand to push the fucking shell out.
Fastest speed of shell or APSDS is Mach 4.5. Which indicate the speed of the exploding gas pushing that shell.

So even if explosive used in the Mach 12 wind tunnel as the driving prime mover, I cannot see how that was done.
But never mind what the fuck I see. Like the bumble bee that theoretically cannot fly, the bumble been do fly.

And that Mach 12 wind tunnel of China exist and work even if I cannot see how .

Ang moh no longer dua dua kee
Chink dua dua kee, and will remain dua dua kee even more in the near and distant future.

Angmoh copying chink will remain a fucking distant 2nd.

Yankee laser beam travelling at the speed of light. Fuck all your missiles still comparing their speed against speed of sound. Don't fuck with the Dotard or he will fuck you up real bad.

Chinese are better than US in laser weapons and got more powerful and cheaper lasers, and exported to 3rd world including Najib MAF! So be careful, some laser beams from JB will zap your ass!
