WASHINGTON (REUTERS) - A US Navy air crew was grounded on Friday (Nov 17) after using their advanced fighter jet to draw a giant image of a penis in the sky with the exhaust, officials said.

The incident took place in skies over Okanogan County in Washington state on Thursday, when a Navy E/A-18 Growler warplane flew the unusual air pattern.

Images of a condensed air trail in the shape of a penis immediately went viral on social media.

A local television station said one mother in Okanogan County was concerned she might have to explain them to her young children.

The Navy, which is trying to crack down on sexual assault in its ranks, issued a formal apology on Friday for what it called an "irresponsible and immature act."

"Sophomoric and immature antics of a sexual nature have no place in Naval aviation today," Vice Admiral Mike Shoemaker, the commander of Naval Air Forces, said in a statement.

"We will investigate this incident to get all the facts and act accordingly."

The mother needing to explain this to her kids is a pure BS and political correctness gone wrong. There is so much carnage, crime and sad things that appear on the press and broadcast life into our living room. These are more important things to explain to the kid.

These pilots are our soldiers in the sky, they should be battle hardened and not taught to be mindless idiot. If the pilot has been doing with these sort of things on a regular basis than there is something wrong. These are guys that will deliver results and not some goody two shoes.

A Navy pilot drew a penis in the sky. It’s not the first time something like this has been investigated.

Residents of Washington state turned their eyes to a clear blue sky Thursday and found themselves staring at a cartoonish rendering of male genitalia, sketched in smoke by at least one Navy EA-18G Growler jet.

The image stretched hundreds of feet high over the Okanogan Highlands, based on photographs shared on social media. It has spawned a full Navy investigation, with a senior officer, Vice Adm. Mike Shoemaker, promising to examine the issue fully and respond.

“The American people rightfully expect that those who wear the Wings of Gold exhibit a level of maturity commensurate with the missions and aircraft with which they’ve been entrusted,” said Shoemaker, who oversees naval air operations, in a statement released by the service. “Naval aviation continually strives to foster an environment of dignity and respect. Sophomoric and immature antics of a sexual nature have no place in Naval aviation today.”

The unit involved, Electronic Attack Squadron 130 of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, flies a two-person variant of the F/A-18 Super Hornet and specializes in electronic warfare. The aircrew responsible has not been identified.

The Defense Department has placed heightened emphasis on sexual harassment and sexual assault in the ranks. And while it’s not immediately clear what this investigation will yield, it’s evident that the Navy is taking it very seriously.

This is not the first time a military pilot has drawn similar images. As the Drive pointed out, a Royal Air Force jet drew what appeared to be a penis in the sky over Scotland in 2014. The RAF later concluded the suggestive smoke trails were caused by a pilot circling in a holding pattern while waiting to land.

In the United States, the Navy’s elite flight demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels, also was cited in an investigation released in 2014 for painting a giant penis on the roof of a trailer at its winter training home in El Centro, Calif, where pilots could see it from above. The blue-and-gold painting was so large that it could be seen on satellite imagery available on Google Maps, the Navy found.

The Blue Angels’ commanding officer at the time, Navy Capt. Gregory McWherter, was reprimanded for failing to stop sexual harassment and condoning pornography and homophobia in the workplace. Investigators also cited his call sign, “Stiffy.”

“This Commanding Officer witnessed, accepted, and encouraged behavior that, while juvenile and sophomoric in the beginning, ultimately and in the aggregate, became destructive, toxic and hostile,” the Navy’s report said. Under his command, the Blue Angels environment “ran counter to established Navy standards and the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and dramatically weakened good order and discipline.”

It’s unclear what fate awaits the pilot in this latest incident. According to a Navy Department manual released earlier this year, incidents of sexual harassment “cover a wide range of behaviors, from verbal comments to physical acts, and can be subtle or overt.”

If the skywriting over Washington is determined to be sexual harassment aimed at someone in the same squadron, service members involved could be subject to formal counseling, negative fitness reports that hurt careers, administrative punishment, or court-martial and separation from the service.

As the photographs of the skywriting circulated online Friday morning, more than 100 people sent stories about the incident to Maximilian Uriarte, a Marine Corps veteran who draws the popular military-themed web comic “Terminal Lance.” Drawing male genitalia is a running joke in his comic. Doing so, he said, is a way that service members joke around with one another in what is still a hyper-masculine culture.

“I don’t know how much the culture of these pilots is embroiled in inappropriate things, but I think that drawing a penis is just meant to be funny,” he said. “For some reason, when you get into a situation where you need to draw something, it’s always a penis.”

He paused for a second.

“I’d love to offer real insight on this,” he said. “But I don’t know that there is much to be had.”

Teacher arrested after she waited to have sex with a student in a candlelit room, authorities say

An Oklahoma teacher is accused of having sex with a high school student after the boy’s parents reported nude photographs and text messages on their son’s phone to authorities.

Hunter Day, a 22-year-old teacher at Yukon High School in Yukon, Okla., was arrested Wednesday after authorities said they used the boy’s phone to confirm a meeting and found Day sitting on her living room floor with the lights off and candles lit.

Day, who officers say admitted to having a sexual relationship with the boy, is charged with rape in the second degree, possession of child pornography and soliciting sex from a minor using technology, Canadian County Sheriff’s Office officials said in a statement posted on Facebook. Day is being held on $85,000 bail.

“This is a classic case of a serious breach of public trust,” Canadian County Sheriff Chris West said in the statement. “School teachers are entrusted to protect and educate our children, not to engage in an unlawful sexual relationship with them.”

Authorities said they were made aware of the alleged relationship after receiving a complaint from the boy’s parents, who were worried that their son had already had sex with the teacher — and believed at the time that she was his chemistry teacher. It is unclear whether Day, who taught science, actually taught the student.

The parents asked investigators to conduct a forensic review of their son’s phone, officials said. Investigators say they discovered evidence that Day and the boy already had sex and had made plans to have sex again at her home on Wednesday. Using the boy’s phone, investigators sent Day a text message confirming the meeting. Day said “Yes,” officials said.

She also told the boy to hurry up before her husband got home, officials said.

When investigators arrived at Day’s home, they sent a text message form the boy’s phone that said “I’m here,” officials said. Day responded with a message that read, “the doors unlocked as usual.” Investigators opened the door and identified themselves.

Officials said Day fully cooperated and admitted to the sexual relationship, as well as sending photos of herself in her bra and panties. She said she had received photos of the boy’s genitalia.

Day’s attorneys could not be immediately reached.

Day was hired to teach science at Yukon High School at the beginning of the school year, according to an October report by Oklahoma City-based News 9. She was among the state’s 1,500 emergency certified teachers hired without education training to help mitigate teacher shortages. It’s one of many ways Oklahoma is dealing with a deepening budget crisis that has forced class sizes to surge, art and foreign-language programs to shrink or disappear and — in many districts — schools to operate just four days a week.

News 9 reported that Day had little to no teaching experience. She held a degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and at one point planned to go to medical school. Day had a 10-month contract to teach at the school, but said she planned to get her certification requirement so she could return next year.

Emergency certified teachers are filling classrooms in Oklahoma from pre-K through high school, and attend training throughout the school year that helps them handle student behavior problems and other classroom issues, News 9 reported.

“I think my biggest concern when I first traveled down this route was behavior management,” Day told News 9 in October. “I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to manage the kids or that they would look at me and see how young I am and think ‘Oh, well you’re just a kid, too, and I don’t have to listen to you.’ ”

Yukon Public Schools said in a statement Thursday that officials conduct background checks on employees before hiring them, and that nothing alerted them of Day’s alleged behavior. The school district is cooperating with authorities and can’t release additional information about the incident while its investigation remains open.

News 9 reported Thursday that Day’s husband is a football coach at the school.
