This elder owned some important factory or primary production facility in their village and was deemed to be very important to the well-being of this village. What was really interesting was that they tested both native and non-native speakers of Chinese and had it read both in English and Chinese.
In the case of reading it in English. English natives leaned more towards letting the son go something to the tune of 70%. Tiong natives who read it in English were ambivalent about 50-50. When read in Chinese, English natives capitulated and 60% wanted to rein him in. Native tiongs reading it in Mandarin 90% wanted to hammer his feet into the ground.
