“To the members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, the armed forces, and all of the police, I say tonight that you must lay down your weapons and have complete immunity or, in the alternative, face certain death,” President Donald Trump said in his address, announcing a “major” operation in Iran.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), the elite wing of the Iranian military, has propped up the Iranian regime for decades. It is tasked both with combating enemies abroad and stamping out protests at home. Here’s what to know about it.

What is the IRGC and how did it start?

The IRGC exists to “guard” the theocracy. After Iran’s last monarch was deposed in 1979, various paramilitary groups that helped hasten his downfall coalesced into the IRGC. It resisted initial attempts to be incorporated into the regular army and cemented its power during its deployment in the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.

Today, it is the most powerful branch of Iran’s military, independent of the regular army. Comprising between 150,000 and 190,000 troops, it has an army, navy, air force and intelligence wing, and has also become enmeshed throughout Iran’s civilian economy.

What is the Quds Force?

The Quds Force is an expeditionary unit made up of the IRGC’s most elite fighters. It was originally tasked with foreign operations, starting with Hezbollah in Lebanon. The force has since supported several non-state actors in the Middle East, from Hamas in Gaza to the Houthis in Yemen and even the Taliban in Afghanistan during the 1990s.

What is the Basij?

The Basij – another of the IRGC’s five branches – operates like the police: visible, street-level, domestic. Meaning “mobilization” in Farsi, the Basij is a volunteer group which plucks members from across the country, often from poorer, more conservative backgrounds. It is tasked with propping up the regime at home and enforcing Islamic morality among the public.

Israel has confirmed that Iran’s supreme leader was killed in strikes on Saturday, according to two Israeli sources familiar with the matter.

One of the sources said Israel had obtained a photo of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s dead body. The second source said an official announcement is being prepared.

Earlier in the evening, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there are many signs that Khamenei is “no longer with us.”

Meanwhile, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said that Iran’s president and Supreme Leader are “safe and sound.” But Khamenei has not been seen in public or in videos since the strikes began.

Trump: Iran's supreme leader is dead

By Adam Cancryn

President Donald Trump said Saturday that Iran Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is dead following joint US-Israeli strikes, calling it “not only Justice for the people of Iran, but for all Great Americans.”

“This is the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country,” he wrote in a Truth Social Post.

Trump added that “heavy and pinpoint bombing” of the nation would continue throughout the week or “as long as necessary to achieve our objective of PEACE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND, INDEED, THE WORLD.”

The Israeli military has published a list of senior Iranian officials it says were killed in Saturday’s airstrikes.

The list includes Aziz Nasirzadeh, the country’s defense minister; Ali Shamkhani, the head of the Iranian Security Council; Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC); Saleh Asadi, an intelligence official; research officials Hossein Jabal Amelian and Reza Mozaffari-Nia; and longtime defense liason Mohammed Shirazi.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi earlier told NBC that, as far as he knew, all of Iran’s senior leadership were safe. Meanwhile, Israeli sources have told CNN that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in a strike. Israel, however, has not shared evidence of Khamenei’s death.

In full: Trump's statement announcing Supreme Leader Khamenei's death

Published at 05:46

Donald Trump has just announced that Iran's Ayatollah Khamenei has been killed.

Here is his whole post on his Truth Social Platform:

Khamenei, one of the most evil people in History, is dead.

This is not only Justice for the people of Iran, but for all Great Americans, and those people from many Countries throughout the World, that have been killed or mutilated by Khamenei and his gang of bloodthirsty THUGS.

He was unable to avoid our Intelligence and Highly Sophisticated Tracking Systems and, working closely with Israel, there was not a thing he, or the other leaders that have been killed along with him, could do.

This is the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country. We are hearing that many of their IRGC, Military, and other Security and Police Forces, no longer want to fight, and are looking for Immunity from us.

As I said last night, “Now they can have Immunity, later they only get Death!” Hopefully, the IRGC and Police will peacefully merge with the Iranian Patriots, and work together as a unit to bring back the Country to the Greatness it deserves. That process should soon be starting in that, not only the death of Khamenei but the Country has been, in only one day, very much destroyed and, even, obliterated.

The heavy and pinpoint bombing, however, will continue, uninterrupted throughout the week or, as long as necessary to achieve our objective of PEACE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND, INDEED, THE WORLD!

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran's last shah (king), has welcomed the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

"Ali Khamenei, the bloodthirsty Zahhak [an evil king in Iranian mythology] of our time, the killer of tens of thousands of Iran’s bravest sons and daughters, has been erased from the pages of history," Pahlavi writes on social media.

"With his death, the Islamic Republic has effectively come to an end and will soon be consigned to the dustbin of history."

Pahlavi discouraged Iranian officials from appointing a successor and warned that it was the military, security and police forces "last chance" to join the people.

"This marks the beginning of our great national celebration; but it is not the end of the road."

Pahlavi followed his parents and siblings into exile following the 1979 revolution and has resided in the United States since.

Two videos confirmed to show celebrations in Iran

Published at 06:27

By Shayan Sardarizadeh and Ghoncheh Habibiazad

BBC Verify has confirmed three videos showing celebrations in the cities of Karaj and Tehran tonight following unconfirmed reports of the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in strikes by Israel and the US.

One clip, filmed in a residential district near the city of Karaj, external, shows a group of residents dancing and cheering on the street, while cars sound their horns.

The first of the four videos in this X post, external, filmed from an apartment in a residential block in the Ekbatan district, west Tehran, shows a number of residents cheering and clapping from the windows of their homes.

A reverse search brings no earlier results for either clip, and further checks show no sign of manipulation with artificial intelligence.

In another video, a man shouts "I'm dreaming, hello new world!" and the crowd is seen celebrating in the southern Fars province while taking down a sign of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Ambassador Mike Waltz tells UN Security Council strikes on Iran were "lawful actions"

From CNN's Alejandra Jaramillo

US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz defended American military strikes on Iran during remarks at the UN Security Council, calling them “lawful actions” and arguing that diplomacy cannot move forward without a credible partner for peace.

“The international community has long affirmed a simple and necessary principle, Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. That principle is not a matter of politics, it’s a matter of global security, and to that end, the United States is taking awful actions this month,” Waltz said.

He described what the Pentagon called “Operation Epic Fury” as narrowly focused on military targets and framed the strikes as part of a broader effort to counter Iranian aggression and prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

“Operation Epic Fury is directed towards specific and strategic objectives, to dismantle missile capabilities that threaten allies, to degrade naval assets used to destabilize international waters and to disrupt the machinery that arms proxy militias and to ensure the Iranian regime never, ever can threaten the world with a nuclear weapon,” he added.

“Diplomacy cannot succeed where there is no genuine willingness to cease aggression, where there is no genuine partner for peace,” Waltz said.

Waltz is the first US official other than President Donald Trump to speak publicly following the joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran.

A concourse at Dubai International Airport (DXB) sustained “minor damage” following an incident early on Sunday.

“Four staff sustained injuries and received prompt medical attention,” Dubai Airports said in a statement to CNN.

Most of the terminals were already cleared of passengers as an earlier precautionary measure when the airports were closed on Saturday.

Social media videos verified by CNN show the interior of the airport filled with smoke as dozens of airline employees calmly evacuated the building.

Eyewitnesses have also described to CNN scenes of ambulances rushing toward the airport.

Earlier on Saturday, Dubai Airports issued a statement that said “passengers must not travel to the airport and are advised to contact their airline directly for the latest flight updates.”

The airport is one of the busiest in the world and serves as major aviation hub in the Middle East.
