Uncle Yap/GMS/TOC - Citizen Journalism

This is a suggestion and wonder if GMS and TOC can work together with Uncle Yap to highlight day to day events that seem to miss the gaze of the grassroots and the authorities.

IN recent days UY has shown videos of obvious safety issues. All he needs is aproper forum and platform. This is a man who is prepared to chase such incidents. He only needs guidance. I am sure the TOC will have full rights over publications.

Readers can also call up UY via TOC to highlight such issues. Lets not wait for a serious incident to occur to act.

Although Uncle Yap has a credibility issue, he does raise some important matters, like the Bugis crossing for instance which is clearly very hazardous.

I will ask TOC if they are willing to get Uncle Yap's work onto their front lines and arrange some collaboration. It would be good if TOC can help mould Uncle Yap into a citizen activist and leverage on him.

Agree. UY is a gem as a citizen journalist. Let him probe the still lacking of lifts on every floor of HDB flats while govt wants to waste money on packing more cars into the carparks. I can think of 10 storey HDB flats in Jln Bukit Ho Swee/Jln klinik which have a lot of old aged senior citizens but HDB no longer wants to look into their interests or care about them.

Yes, lift upgrading was done many many years ago and lifts were added for every floor up to only the 9th. HDB said then for the 10th floor lift, they needed to add a motor room on the roof, so was too costly and residents could not agree. But nowadays, technology is available and everywhere else it is being done. So why not the poor old folks at JBHS/JK? Govt got so much money they give to HC to play pinball at TH.

This is a good idea. I've been following the political development across the Straits as well. They have a massive "alternative" media in Malaysia. Malaysia-today, malaysiakini all comes to mind. It has tremendously helped the opposition party in gaining vital votes over the years. If a credible "alternative" news agency can be established in Singapore it may have the same effects. The only problem I see is that other then in this forum, most Singaporean don't seem to care about the political future of this country versus Malaysian. Is this a reason why TOC has not been as successful as say Malaysiakini?

It is safe to say that some of us had issues with UY's sincereity and loose cannon tactics. I used to give him hell. He has since been focusing on relevant issues and his video quality is great and the topics are more relevant in today's context. Needs alot of polish and this is where TOC can help. He is also a known identity and he is ready to reach out to people. Not many of us can't and won't for various reasons.

I dislike Uncle Yap because I consider him to be narcissistic. You should see the videos he made which features himself - he is either in Qing-era dress or uses yellow prominently. Yellow, as you know is the colour of the royal in ancient China. Netizens who doesn't know UY will think he is mental or narcissistic. His anti-LKY & anti-PAP diatribes and accusations turns primary school kids away.

To give credit, UY did raise certain valid issues in his videos, although I really wonder how did he appear in the right place, at a right time with a digital recorder. If he were to contribute to some half decent publication, the editor needs to chain up the loose canon proper or else the half decent publication will be on the road to oblivion.

TOC, Temasek Review et al are still spewing forth largely cheap journalism! And this is the problem with Singaporeans. Alternative media in Malaysia and other democratic countries provide in-depth articles. All we get from our brand of alternative media is cheap journalism but with a different message but the people are not provided with true knowledge - how to think - to gleam more from what is said and to appreciate that mainstream media is nothing more than one-sided, cheap text masqueraded as journalism. At the end of the day, the masses (60% and more) will see through the veil and decide, based on kiasuim, on which media outlet to follow. And there are a large number of voters that have no other viable mass media inout other than from the various media prostitutes.

TOC and Temasek Review have to concentrate on quality instead of quantity. 10 articles of 10 different things with 4-8 paragraphs of rhetoric and little factual information is no different from the media prostitutes that already exist.

The alternative media have to be much better. It's a huge call but it will have do two important things -
1) show that alternative media is a serious endeavour and is keen to provide as much factual information as is possible
2) show that mainstream media is lacking in providing adequate information for the masses from which to make viable decisions

The kick in the mouth to the PAPies is to show that mainstream media is a propaganda machinery AND that there are alternatives, that are insightful as well as balanced, on matters that mean the most to the masses. Being insightful and balanced and yet have a mind that one is fighting, using propaganda against propaganda.

The PAPies will not relinquish the mainstream media but if the masses can be shown that there is an alternative and it is truthful and seemed to be balanced, then there is a chance that mainstream media can be replaced with even a flyer sent to a PO BOX once a week of even once every month!

This is politics!!! If you do not control the main mode of communication to voters, then you have very very little chance of gaining power. The onus is on quality through depth, ingenuity, belief and perseverance but without a false chalice - be truthful!

I don't think TOC will touch UY with a 10 foot pole. Donaldson Tan was already too much to handle, you think they still dare to play with fire?

What TOC can do is just ask UY permission to re-post his videos, and then do the rest of the investigative reporting on their own. It's a TR tactic, I must admit, but that's the only way to make use of UY. You don't go near him. You just use him.
