Poland has been one of Kyiv's staunchest allies since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, but the countries are now embroiled in a conflict over imports. Poland, Hungary and Slovakia have extended a ban on Ukrainian grain imports.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the United Nations General Assembly Kyiv was working to preserve land routes for grain exports, but added that the "political theatre" around grain imports was only helping Moscow.

Poland's foreign ministry said Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski had "conveyed the Polish side's strong protest against the statements made by President V Zelenskyy at the UN General Assembly yesterday, alleging that some EU countries feigned solidarity while indirectly supporting Russia".

It said Jablonski also told Ambassador Vasyl Zvarych that "putting pressure on Poland in multilateral forums or sending complaints to international tribunals are not appropriate methods of resolving disputes between our countries".

Poland, Slovakia and Hungary announced curbs on grain imports from Ukraine on Friday after the European Commission decided not to extend a ban on sales into five EU states, including Romania and Bulgaria.

New York | Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has met with US financial leaders including Ken Griffin and Bill Ackman to discuss using private-sector funds to help rebuild his country, according to people briefed on the meeting.

The gathering at Ukraine’s mission to the United Nations in New York on Thursday (AEST) was arranged by JPMorgan Chase executive Mary Erdoes and included representatives from Ukraine, the people said, asking not to be named because the gathering was private.

Other attendees included Blackstone president Jon Gray, Starwood Capital Group’s Barry Sternlicht, former Google boss Eric Schmidt, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, according to the people.

The US and EU have pledged billions in public funds to help Ukraine rebuild critical infrastructure destroyed in a war with Russia that has raged for more than a year.

Earlier, in his first in-person address to the UN Security Council, Mr Zelensky lashed out at Russia for killing tens of thousands of his citizens and called for Moscow to be stripped of its veto as one of the permanent members of the UN’s top decision-making body.

“Veto power in the hands of the aggressor is what has pushed the UN into deadlock,” Mr Zelensky told council members during a tense session, adding it was impossible for the body to stop Russia’s invasion of Ukraine because of Moscow’s ability to veto any effort or initiative at the Security Council.
“Most of the world recognises the truth about this war. It is a criminal and unprovoked aggression by Russia against our nation, aimed at seizing Ukraine’s territory and resources,” said Mr Zelensky, clad in the military-style fatigues that have become his hallmark since Russia’s invasion in February last year.

Mr Zelensky’s appeal came as Ukraine’s allies in the US and Europe have grown increasingly pessimistic about prospects for ending the war soon. Kyiv’s counter-offensive has progressed slowly and officials now see the fighting continuing for years, challenging governments to keep up military and financial support amid growing domestic opposition to the cost.

Russia is digging in for a long conflict, confident it can outlast Kyiv’s allies, according to US and European officials.
Mr Zelensky told global leaders last year that Ukraine’s recovery would involve “colossal investments” and be “the biggest project of our time”.

The country estimates it needs more than $US750 billion ($1.1 trillion) through to 2032 in grants, debt and equity – more than triple the EU’s annual budget. Upwards of $US150 billion is needed for housing and related infrastructure alone.

Michael Bloomberg, majority owner of Bloomberg News parent Bloomberg LP, also attended the meeting, according to one of the people briefed on the gathering.
JPMorgan is Mr Zelensky’s adviser on attracting private capital for the projects. Spokespeople for the New York-based bank and those invited to the meeting declined to comment or had no immediate comment.

Mr Zelensky will be in Washington was expected to head to Washington to press his case for more assistance with President Joe Biden and Republican leaders in Congress, some of whom have questioned calls for continued support.

New York | The entire world has a vested interest in helping defeat the Russian invasion of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky told the UN General Assembly on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST), casting his appeal for more allies and aid as a matter of security – even survival – for many other nations.

Delivering one of the most anticipated speeches of the annual gathering of world leaders, Mr Zelensky painted Russia as a habitual aggressor, citing Moscow’s military interventions in Moldova, Georgia and Syria, its increased control over Belarus and its threats against the Baltic States.
