Wong Kar-Wai to return with Gucci murder movie
Wong Kar Wai is to take on directorial duties on a long-gestating drama about the murder of Maurizio Gucci, grandson of company founder Guccio Gucci.
When Maurizio Gucci was the head of the fashion house he sold his stock in the company in 1993 for $170m. Two years later, he was killed by a hitman; his ex-wife, Patricia Reggiani, was later convicted of arranging the murder.
Originally, the film was to have been directed by Ridley Scott, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie set to star; Margot Robbie is now rumoured to be taking the female lead. The most recent writers to have worked on the script were Andrea (World Trade Center) Berloff and Charles (The Big Short) Randolph.
Funding is coming from Megan Ellison’s Annapurna outfit, which also has Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit riots drama and Bennett Miller’s adaptation of A Christmas Carol in the works.
Wong Kar-Wai’s films have long been praised for their keen visual panache, as well as moving narratives. Movies such as In the Mood for Love and 2046 were especially well-clad. His most recent feature was The Grandmaster, about Ip Man, trainer of kung fu film star Bruce Lee.
