The sisters, who belong to Kolhapur in Maharashtra, were sentenced to death in 2001 for killing several children between 1990 and 1996.

They allegedly kidnapped poor children and forced them to commit thefts.

When the children grew older, the sisters killed them by bashing their heads in, hitting them with iron rods or strangling them.

The court had acquitted kiran shinde, renukas husband, who had turned approver.

Anjanabai gavit, the principal accused and mother of the sisters, had died as an undertrial in december 1997, 14 months after she was arrested in nasik.
