Two Indonesian celebrities nabbed for alleged online prostitution

JAKARTA: Two Indonesian celebrities were arrested on Saturday (Jan 5) for their suspected involvement in online prostitution.

One of them was actress Vanessa Angel, while the other was identified by local media as model Avriellia Shaqqila.


Indonesian news outlet Detik reported that the duo was arrested in separate rooms at a Surabaya hotel.

Citing East Java police chief Arman Asmara, Detik said investigations through social media showed that Avriellia had charged 25 million rupiah (US$1,750), while Vanessa charged 80 million rupiah.

News agency Antara reported that other than the two celebrities, authorities also picked up four witnesses and three other suspects in total.

Earlier on Saturday, the 27-year-old Vanessa had used the Instagram Story feature on her social media page to update fans on her arrival in Surabaya for work.

"See you at @townsquaresurabaya," she wrote, tagging the Instagram account of a mall near downtown Surabaya.

Vanessa Angel's manager known only as Lidya, said she did not know that the actress was involved in online prostitution, adding that "Vanessa went to Surabaya to host a function".

Vanessa issued an apology on Sunday, saying she "realised her mistakes and oversight affected many", wrote another news outlet Tempo.

"I will follow the procedures of the investigation as required," she added.

According to TribunNews, the authorities were first alerted to the case by members of the public.
