Two drivers jailed over fatal accidents

SINGAPORE: Two drivers were sentenced separately in court on Wednesday for causing fatal accidents.

Lim Chor Kiang, a bouncer, was sentenced to eight months' jail and disqualified from driving for eight years.

The 44 year old was found to be speeding under the influence of alcohol. This led him to mistake a left bend for a straight road, causing him to crash into the kerb and centre divider along Upper Paya Lebar Road.

The van overturned before skidding and hitting a power grid box. As a result, two of his rear passengers died and two others were injured.

In another case, prime mover driver Chew Tuan Peow was sentenced to seven months' jail and disqualified from driving for ten years.

Chew's prime mover made a right turn into a driveway that was against the flow of traffic, causing the death of an elderly pedestrian in September last year.

Upon impact, the pedestrian, 66-year-old Lim Kian Tiong, was flung a distance and sustained serious injuries. He was then sent to hospital and was later pronounced dead.
