STOMPer Lynda never suspected that her trusted domestic helper would steal the $1,150 cash that was meant for hongbaos this Chinese New Year and disappear with all her belongings while the family was out.
The STOMPer shares her account:
"We are a regular dual-income family with two young children.
"As both my husband and I need to work to support the family, we had no choice but to engage a domestic helper to help with the housework and the children.
"This was our first time engaging a domestic helper.
"On Jan 25, we brought our baby to the clinic.
"We left my Indonesian maid at home alone.
"When we returned at about 1130am, we discovered that she had taken all her luggage and belongings, as well as our money.
"To date, our total losses are SGD$1,000 in new notes which was in preparation for Chinese New Year, and approximately SGD$150 in coins.
"She also took an umbrella and a pair of white birkenstock slippers worth $70.
"This maid had been working for us for about three months.
"During the period she had been with us, she seemed forgetful and slow in her work but we never complained.
"She was also quiet and soft-spoken.
"We treat her with dignity; she ate what we ate and we gave her more than enough food and rest.
"We never suspected that she would steal our hard-earned money.
"After this incident, we fear for our safety and can no longer trust a maid or any person with our children.
"One of us will have to quit our job to take care of our children.
"With rising living costs, flat premium, utility bills etc, we may have a problem sustaining our simple lifestyle.
"For now, we just hope that the police will be able to locate her and charge her for her crime instead of just sending her back to Indonesia.
"We wonder how we are protected by the law we are if nothing is done.
"Right now, we can only count our blessings that our children are unhurt and try to put this bad incident behind us during this festive season."
