Tribute to Chiam See Tong

Mr Chiam, you are a hero who has done much for the people of Potong Pasir and has continued fighting against PAP despite overwhelming odds.
The only pity is, you could have formed an opposition stronghold much earlier than LTK, had it not for a mad doctor.

you mention that mad doctor in other thread ...so who is he ? where is he now ? what have he done to mr chiam ?

Sir , i like to buy an E ;) but what have he done to mr chiam ?

Went on a hunger strike which went against the party then-protocol. Chiam wanted to censure him but CEC ganged up against Chiam and sided Chee. Though he is not the direct perpetrator, his actions indirectly heated up the tension and made the party hostile against Chiam.

[/FONT]<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:DoNotOptimizeForBrowser/> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--> In her first ever interview with the mainstream media, the wife of veteran opposition leader Mr Chiam See Tong, Ms Lina Loh revealed that Mr Chiam was forced out of the Singapore Democratic Party he founded in 1980.

Ms Loh contacted Lianhe Zaobao herself after reading the Zaobao interview with Dr Chee Soon Juan which was published on 28 February 2010.

Dr Chee was quoted as saying in the interview that he tried to stop Mr Chiam from leaving SDP to no avail, but was disputed by Ms Loh who said it is only “half the story.”

Ms Loh was interviewed together with former SDP CEC member and current Singapore People Party’s Chairman Mr Sin Kek Tong by Lianhe Zaobao journalist Ms Yew Lun Tian.

She sneered at Dr Chee’s claims that he had wanted Mr Chiam to stay.

“If he really wanted to keep Mr Chiam, he coulld well reject the position of the Secretary-General or object to his expulsion when the CEC moved a motion to do so,” she was quoted as saying in Lianhe Zaobao.

During that critical disciplinary proceedings taken against Mr Chiam, only one out of 13 CEC members objected to Mr Chiam’s expulsion. Another one abstain.

Mr Chiam had been hauled up for disciplinary action by SDP CEC for criticizing Dr Chee Soon Juan’s hungry strike in the media. The latter had done so to protest against his “unfair” sacking from NUS for “misusing” research funds.

Ms Loh revealed that Mr Chiam had threatened to resign from his position as Secretary-General in a fit of anger and was amenable to mediation between the two camps spearheaded by Mr Sin.

As Mr Chiam was heading towards the political oblivion as being sacked from SDP would mean he lose his parliamentary seat as well, Mr Sin founded the Singapore People’s Party in 1994 which Mr Chiam eventually joined later in the year.

Ms Loh stressed that her decision to be interviewed is not to bad-mouth Dr Chee or to argue with him.

“I am only saying the truth for my husband to let the younger generation to understand Uncle Chiam, I need to step forward to clarify that he did not abandon SDP, when we were forced to leave, we were in so much pain in our hearts,” she said.

Mr Chiam’s acrimonious departure from SDP marked the beginning of its decline. After reaching dazzling heights during the 1991 general election when it won an unprecedented 3 seats, it would go on to lose all its seats in the 1997 election.

Though Dr Chee has perservered against all odds to keep the party together in the face of crippling defamation lawsuits launched against it by PAP leaders, it is unlikely that SDP will regain its former glory again.

Not a bad guy, probably. Hot-headed, young and foolish will be apt do describe him. However, this would have been okay, if not for the fact that he just retarded the opposition progress when Chiam managed to bring in two more MPs into Parliament. And SDP managed to squander away the two seats in the 1997 elections.

No problems. You are probably in Japan for so long to be in the know. Do introduce me some nice cities to live in next time. :D

1991 was a significant year. Opposition managed to win four seats. Potong Pasir was defended successfully. Bukit Gombak and Nee Soon Central fell to SDP and Hougang fell to you-know-who.

SPP's Chiam says credit for new Cabinet goes to opposition voters
Posted: 18 May 2011 2213 hrs

SINGAPORE : Singapore People's Party (SPP) Secretary-General Chiam See Tong said credit for the new Cabinet change should go to Singaporeans who voted for the opposition.

In an email to Channel NewsAsia, he said they have "forced a change within the People's Action Party".

Mr Chiam also asked why Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng did not let voters of Bishan-Toa Payoh know before Polling Day that he would be retiring from Cabinet.

He said it would have affected the way they voted.

Mr Chiam anchored a five-member SPP team that lost to the PAP team led by DPM Wong in the May 7 General Election.

I respect Mr Chiam through and through. But oddly when the results for Bishan toa payoh and potong pasir were announced on the morning of 8 may, I was not devastated.

Mr Chiam can finally take a well deserved rest. His supporters at SPP rallies is testament of the tireless service to the people of Potong Pasir.

Imperfect as his political career may be, his legacy of courage and honour lives on in all opposition supporters.

Good to see that you have saved up enough for retirement. Tokyo is a pretty nasty place to live and work, it is equivalent to Singapore on "Hell Mode". If I will like to live in Kanto region, I rather live in Yokohama. Best is Kyushu region, heard life there is more laid-back and things cheaper.
