SINGAPORE: Luxury purchases pushed Singapore's retail sales higher in May -- rising 10 per cent compared to a year ago.

According to the Department of Statistics (DOS), retail sales would have increased 8.3 per cent if motor vehicles were excluded.

The agency said retail sales decreased by 0.4 per cent on a seasonally adjusted basis compared to April. Excluding motor vehicles, retail sales declined 0.8 per cent on-month.

Analysts said the start of the Great Singapore Sale and the launch of the new iPad may have boosted spending. More people bought watches and jewellery in May as sales for that segment rose 25.7 per cent from a year ago.

Food & beverage sales went up 5.2 per cent on-year.

Meanwhile retail sales of motor vehicles, petrol service stations, telecommunications apparatus and computers and medical goods & toiletries saw double-digit growth ranging from 11.5 to 16.3 per cent in May.

Analysts expect retail sales to hold up in the coming months - boosted by strong tourist arrivals.

SINGAPORE: Some 22,300 Certificates of Entitlement (COE) will be made available for the six-month period from August 2011 to January 2012, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Friday.

The 22,324 figure is hardly changed from the quota of the previous six months, which was 22,368.

The new quota works out to 3,720 COEs monthly.

Those shopping for a 1,600cc car or a motorcycle in the next six months can breathe a bit easier.

The COE supply for the two vehicle categories is bigger for the period.

1,096 COEs will be available monthly for cars up to 1,600cc and for motorcycles there will be 775 COEs monthly.

Those who are in the market for bigger cars or commercial vehicles, on the other hand, should brace themselves for higher prices on the back of an even tighter COE supply.

LTA said the quota consists of three components, including a provision for 1.5 per cent vehicle growth based on the vehicle population as at end December last year.

The other two components are replacement COEs for vehicles de-registered between January and June 2011, and adjustment for over-projections of vehicle de-registrations in 2008/2009.

Bidding under the new quota will start with next month's first open bidding exercise.

The next COE quota announcement - for the COE bidding period from February 2012 to July 2012 - will be made in January 2012.

LTA added that the 1.5 per cent vehicle growth rate, which is valid for three years from 2009 to 2011, is currently under review.

It will announce the growth rate from 2012 once the review has been completed.
