For Trans Activists, Social Distancing for COVID-19 is a Conspiracy to Deny Gender ID, Affirming Surgery

www.womenarehuman.com

US; UK; PA. Since procedures have been put in place throughout much of the world to minimize the spread of COVID-19, transgender-identifying individuals and their advocates in multiple nations have flooded news websites and social media with complaints on how quarantine and social distancing procedures affect their ability to obtain validation of their gender identities.

“Surgery or Death!” Social Media Users Warn

Transgender-identifying individuals who had been awaiting surgeries that they hoped would feminize or masculine their appearance by implanting or removing breasts, reshaping facial features or molding a facsimile of the genitalia of the other sex have instead seen these procedures indefinitely postponed or canceled due to Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), a respiratory illness that has infected a confirmed 968,480 persons worldwide, killing 49,340.

In response to their canceled surgeries, transgender-identifying individuals are flocking to social media and major news outlets to express fury, misery or desire to commit lethal violence against themselves or others.

“If corona virus [sic] affects my top surgery plans I will set something on fire,” Twitter user russ, who tweets as @wormdisorder, warned on March 13. Louis, who tweets under the handle @tazdaar, expressed a similar desire to bring about a fiery end, writing, “If my bottom surgery gets cancelled because of coronavirus I’m going to light myself on fire.” Noting cancellation of an expected top surgery due to “coronavirus concerns,” Leo, who tweets as @fairyva1ha11a, demanded dramatically: “Give me mastectomy or give me death!”

Joshua Safer, Executive Director at Mount Sinai’s Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery, informed the media that the purpose of canceling “all non-emergent gender-affirming surgeries” is to “protect our transgender and non-binary patients from the risk of transmission of COVID-19 while at the hospital, and will allow the hospital the capacity to care for critically ill COVID-19 patients.”

Nevertheless, major newspapers reverberated with feverish panic over the inability of the trans-identified to surgically modify their appearance during the ongoing deadly global crisis.

“I’ve waited nearly a year for SRS and now the growing coronavirus pandemic is threatening to take it away,” Tatyana Bellamy Walker, a female Business Insider reporter who identifies as nonbinary and a man, frantically revealed in her opinion column. “The pandemic is becoming my latest obstacle to participating in public life.”

While acknowledging that the region is “a ghost town […] because of the outbreak,” the transgender-identifying reporter nonetheless characterizes COVID-19 as merely another barrier to transgender-identified individuals accessing surgical modifications: “My gender-affirming surgery is considered ‘elective.’ However, if my surgery is postponed, it will have a severe impact on my mental and physical health. […] I am not alone: Transgender and nonbinary people face many barriers when it comes to finding access to gender-affirming healthcare.”

NBC News opened its melodramatic take with the line: “For as long as he can remember, Jaceon Coronado has dreamed of having a flat chest.” The 20-year-old described herself as “completely crushed” after receiving a phone call notifying her that her scheduled mastectomy had been postponed.

Ashton Onion

Ashton Onion, like most interviewed by NBC for the article, is female and identifies as a nonbinary transgender man. Onion briefly touches on a matter that may be troubling many other interviewees: “Growing up in a Catholic space, I was very religious. I remember growing up praying I wouldn’t develop a chest.” The interviewer, Serena Daniari, who identifies as a transgender woman, does not further inquire to determine whether the 22-year-old’s inability to reconcile her lesbian orientation with her Christian faith may be at the root of her rejection of her female body.

Onion initially wore a chest binder, but as a result, suffered “physical pain and stress on his body that is not sustainable, including back pain, skin irritation and breathing problems”: “It’s always me deciding which kind of toll I want to experience today. A physical pain when I wear the binder or a mental toll when I don’t wear one.”

Katalina Murrie

31-year-old Katalina Murrie, who is male and identifies as a woman, stepped up the drama, telling NBC, “I’m not gonna last to my 40s if I don’t have this surgery.”

Frank Jones, who is aged 25 and has seen the second stage of her phalloplasty postponed due to COVID-19, brought the media melodramatics to a crescendo, fretting to Business Insider, “I really just feel like there’s going to be such a spike in suicides for trans people this year because it can be so heartbreaking.”

Pattern of Self-Centeredness

Even outside of periods of global crisis, transgender individuals have publicly insisted that removal of their own healthy body parts for the purpose of “affirming” their gender identities must always take precedence over others’ ability to access live-saving medical treatment.

Trans-identifying individual complains that cancer mastectomies – surgical procedures that remove cancerous breast tissue – are prioritized over gender-affirming cosmetic surgeries for trans-identifying persons.

Self-described radio journalist Toby Sinbad Walker (@TobySinbad) tweeted in 2018: “Trans patients were called last week and informed their long-awaited top surgery had been cancelled to let more cancer mastectomies happen. It’s not their responsibility. Our surgery is not cosmetic. Transgender wait times are fatal and I #WontDieWaiting.”

“Transgender People Have Always Existed

The notion that transgender individuals’ lives depend on their ability to have healthy body parts that trigger their ‘gender dysphoria’ significantly modified or amputated seems to conflict with a popular saying in the transgender community that “transgender people have always existed.”

If, as the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio boldly declares, “transgender people have existed for as long as humans have been around,” and if suicide is the inevitable result of lack of access to gender-affirming surgery as transgender activists claim psychiatry has proven, and because transgender individuals have only had access to gender-affirming surgery since the 20th century – and only sporadically – then it seems there would be lengthy records throughout the world noting that about 100% of persons who experienced intense discomfort over the sex of their bodies had committed suicide.

Critiques of Preoccupation with Gender-Affirming Surgery During Pandemic

Radical feminist Geneviève Glück argues that the intense focus on gender-affirming surgeries during the COVID-19 crisis is not life-saving, but narcissistic:
Narcissism is another kind of pandemic. No, breast implants for men are not ‘life-saving.’ Women who’ve had mastectomies due to breast cancer can’t even get them state-funded, and yet transactivists are over here acting like fake tits are a matter of life or death. If everyone around you is dead or in quarantine, there’ll be no one left to validate you. No one to see your shiny new ‘facial feminization’ surgery. How much longer are we expected to entertain narcissists?
“I have a friend whose pacemaker surgery has been postponed until May,” another woman commented on Facebook. “I’d like to see them explain to her how elective castration is more vital.”

Twitter user @ser_glee called for “gender identity law and comprehensive sex education” for Panama over the nation’s perceived faux pas of forgetting gender identity during the deadly global pandemic. “Trans people are the most unprotected […] in the face of a system that does not recognize them by their gender identity,” the tweeter claimed.

IPDH Panamá, an LGBTI organization, accused the country of being inhumane by violating and invisibilizing trans people through a policy that allows men and women to leave quarantine on alternate days.

“IT SEEMS THAT THE PANDEMIC HAS NOT GIVEN ENOUGH LESSONS OF HUMANITY AND COEXISTENCE IN SOME,” Panama’s LGBTI Independents for Human Rights (IPDH Panamá) ranted on their Instagram account on March 30. “Tomorrow, March 31st, is another TRANS VISIBILITY DAY… and the Panamanian State, not having laws that recognize the Human Rights of this population, announces a measure that makes their rights invisible and violates them” by “denying […] the existence of Trans Women and Men who do not have an identity document according to their identity/gender expression.”

A Facebook user pointed out that demanding societies and governments currently preoccupied with the global populace’s rapidly failing health and mounting death rate shift more of that attention to validating trans-identified individuals’ gender identities is unrealistic. “Having society support their delusions […] really isn’t helping them,” she said. She suggested that there is an underlying mental illness that is causing delusions about their sex and suicide ideation, and they “should be getting treatment for that.”
