A Kanchanaburi-bound train carrying over 100 Thai and foreign tourists hit a gas lorry in the province's Tha Muang district on Monday morning, injuring the driver of the truck, police said.

The crash happened about 10.05am. The three-carriage train heading to Kanchanaburi province hit the rear of the six-wheel truck carrying cylinders of gas at a railroad crossing near Wat Santikhirisri Borommathat in Tha Muang district.

More than 50 gas cylinders were scattered over on the road and gas leaked from some of them, forcing anxious police and volunteers to open the valves on the leaking containers. Five fire trucks were rushed to the scene to prevent a possible gas explosion.

The driver of the truck Aran Chachaeng, 28, sustained chin injuries and a fractured bone in his back. No passengers on board the train were injured.

Police said Mr Aran was driving his truck across the track and it was hit by the train. The crossing has no warning signals and no barriers. The train received some damage but resumed its trip shortly later.
